Disco 2 Both Main Beam Headlights Stopped Working

Pointed with red arrow where to measure both sides, positive probe there and negative to earth there must be 12V with switch on

Well, I've learned something there!!!:D Thanks! Yes, you can measure with the fuse in situ! Okay, will try again - after I reinstall the stalk switch!!!

Just out of interest - looked at the main switch plug (the one with six small pins and one larger pin - as per diagram you showed earlier) and wondered if I could check continuity or resistance across any pins to check the integrity of the switch?

I told you how to rule out the switch, the contact for the dipped beam is across pins 2 - 6 i dont know how to explain better

Missed that: "Unplug the stalk and make a bridge with a wire across pins 2(blue/red) - 6(brown/purple) and if the dipped beam doesnt come on the problem is not the switch, if you get the lights with the bridge then replace the stalk...did you check fusible link FL10 engine bay?"

Stalk back in place for now (had to drive somewhere) - will look for a small piece of electrical wire to bridge stalk contacts later and rule in/out the stalk, before that I'll check the F9 and F10 fuses in situ!

FL10 (30A) is fine - continuity with multimeter.

Checked F9 and F10 in situ this time around - both show 11.8V (ignition on and dipped beam selected on stalk). I assume this means there is power/voltage at the stalk/switch. So likely stalk/switch at fault, but need to confirm later by removing the stalk again and this time bridging pins 2 and 6 on the stalk plug with a piece of wire - if bridge turns dipped beam on, then it is a faulty stalk/switch?

It means that the stalk is OK cos F9 and 10 are getting feed through the stalk then from the fuses the power should go to the lights so if you dont get 12V in the lamp's plugs the problem is within the fusebox or between the fusebox and lamps. See attachments, the wires from C0587 pins 1 and 9 (with red stars) are going directly to the lamps so you'll have to be handy and turn the fusebox in situ and measure there... quite common to be corrosion in those plugs, if you dont have voltage between earth and those pins you need another fusebox but if you do and no power in the lamp's plugs there's a wiring issue which is very bad news but that's not very likely

Oh! So power comes from battery, through the fusible link and then to the stalk; then from the stalk through F9 and F10 (fusebox under steering wheel) and to the dipped beam lights?

Mmmm! Bit more work and investigation required! At least I haven't wasted money on a new stalk!

Sincere thanks for walking me through this!

Will have to wait until I get a bit of spare time!

Follow-up - sorted a while ago but I need to confess! I feel rather embarrassed - I was a bit sloppy and wasted a bit of time! Yes, both globes were blown - likely one went and the other went a bit later and I just didn't notice until it was quite dark and then I noticed I had no lights!!! Anyway, at least I checked a few other things and put in two nice new globes! Conclusion: don't rush, don't be sloppy, and focus on the most likely first, even if it seems "improbable"!!! Thank you all! Now please refer to my new thread - I have a thin layer of oil in my coolant.

.....as mentioned in posts #2 and #5:):):):):)

Yes, I know!!!:oops::oops: Mark of a person is one who admits to their mistakes (even the dumb ones!;)) - I once had a boss who I thought was perfect until I realised he was just an inveterate liar!
The peeps who can never admit a mistake or that they were wrong usually have enormous inferiority complexes.
So good for you.
I too make huge booboos from time to time.
Never bothered about it, as the man said "The person who never made a mistake never made anything."
Think of the effort these w@nkers must go to to try and circumvent anyone finding them out. Tw@ts!

I agree! Well, I did learn something and ended up checking other things and learning a bit - I took the scenic route to fixing the problem!:D
