Bonnet spare wheel carrier

i got a spare wheel carrier from a bloke down the road a few months back but I heard that the td5 bonnet wasn’t strong enough for a wheel so i bought a tdi bonnet with the holes for a spare wheel carrier but no carrier on it needs a few bits of welding but it was dirt cheap went to fit my carrier to it but totally different hole pattern anyone know the type I need

Have you tried driving a Defender with the spare wheel on the bonnet. I have a spare wheel carrier on my bonnet. I tried it a couple of times but didn't like the restricted view. Difficult to drive down roads in small villages where you have cars tightly parked. I gave up and just left the spare on the back door. The only time I would use the bonnet carrier is when I want to carry two spares like when crossing morocco. If you haven't driven one, try it. Not just sit behind the wheel but drive it.I originally so wanted it to work but soon changed my mind. Don't want to put a damper on your spirit.

I’m only going to put it on for long trips or places that are prone to punctures and if I go to take photos

Spare wheels are a pain in the ar5e on the bonnet, a 750 is bloody heavy.
To answer your question, you have a proper military style bonnet mount and a bonnet that has had a rear door mount fitted to it previously.
If you do persist with the bonnet mounted spare, you should fit the solid bar type bonnet stay in place of the folding one.

Yes I have the stick type as it’s a td5 thought it was a rear door holder

thanks going to buy second hand spare wheel carrier to match my holes going to weld additional support brackets and some bits and bobs hanging around to strengthen bonnet and maybe a scissor holder as well as the stick for safety.

looks cool though as series 3 front grill and doors and light surrounds hopefully series3 seats and yellow and red gear knob

I reckon that will look cool, I have a back door spare holder mounted on my bonnet, I had to use angled aluminium to add strength to the bonnet but its been there years and never had a problem with it.
As for driving with it on there its never been an issue to be honest, my wheel is a 7.50 and not some stupidly wide thing so it may be a bit lower profile than some others, But like everything else you get used to it.

to get 7.50 tyres as my spare is a 7.50
My dad said he got used to his on his series3

Spare wheel on the bonnet is the future...Mine is a standard TD5 bonnet with some unistrut reinforcements
and a modded back door wheel mount. 255-85 MTs bit heavy mind but cheaper than gym membership.

I took my rear door carrier, drilled the holes in the bonnet, bolted it from the underside and it's never been a problem. Don't overthink it
