Like most older Defender owners I want to get my spare wheel of my rear door before it rips it off.

I have always liked the idea of bonnet mouting the spare as opposed to shelling out £200 odd quid for a decent swing away.

Whats people's opinions? The 110 is my daily drive so I have to park it often etc, do you really loose that much visibility? Should I worry about the bonnet guilitoning my head off everytime I look under the bonnet?

having it on the bonnet does restrict visibility a bit, specially when yer going uphill / off road. makes the bonnet ferkin heavy to lift and I wouldn't trust the bonnet stay with it on there. it also makes the steering a bit heavier.
i've got a swing away carrier - cost me £65 and it's great.

Theres been all manner of discussion on this.

Against it:-
1. In an accident the wheel could come through the windscreen.
2. Restricted vision.
3. The hernias you will get taking it off the bonnet.
4. The hernias you will get putting it back on the bonnet.
5. The body work you will damage getting it off the bonnet.
6. The bodywork you will damage putting it back on the bonnet.
7. The bad back you will get opening the bonnet.
8. The fingers you will chop off closing the bonnet.

For:-
1. Erm.

Putting it on the roof sounds safer! Knocks off a couple of bad points from the list........:)

Hi,

If you are going to fit it on the bonnet, and you havnt yet purchased the a mount. I would get the genuine kit from land rover. included is all the parts needed to mount the spare wheel to the bonnet but also includes a diffrent bonnet stay as 90/110 with spare wheels on the bonnet have a solid bonnet prop rather than the counter lever type. Also has all the stiffing braces which are fixed to the underside of the bonnet. From memory the kit costs around £100 and I fitted it in a few hours.

As for it coming through the windscreen in a accident. na.

You do lose sight of the left hand corner which makes parking tricky but like all vehicles you get ust to it and parking becomes secound nature after a while.

Dont like the sound of that much, but as a Defender is a death trap anyway I guess this doesnt matter too much.

Paddocks have the genuine LR kits in stock for £45, which is what has sparked my interest.

Swing Aways just seem over complicated.

Easy for you to say Griff, you got a Scorpion one for free!

Might just get a cheap Paddocks job, looks okay and I might be able to bodge a Hi-Lift mount onto it as well.
