bolts snapped on outer casing of my drive shaft help

just noticed befor that the bolts have snapped ive pulled the shaft out and it looks ok an all the spindle on the end is ok but im new to all this lanny stuff so dont know what damage has been done, will the bits of bolts that are snapped in the thread drill out ? any advice would be appreciated thanks paul

some 1 must be able to help me do i just need to get the old screws out put a new gasket on or what is there a reason why the bolts have snapped?

drill them with colbalt drill and stud extractor

how many have snapped-if most of them-indicates either way overtightened or came loose and suffered fatigue.

BOLTS have snapped cos they have been overtightened,on a series motor torque setting is only 38ft/plbs wich is nothing,you can do it up to 90 ft/plbs with a ring spanner+plus they are only rolled thread bolts,ie soft,ignorance is the usual cause im afraid,,,[ITS ON THE WHEEL IT MUST BE BAR TIGHT],WRONG IT MUST BE TORQUED UP RIGHT,my 1958 sii still had the original bolts in when i sold it,all bein well the bolts should drill ok but use the biggest easy out that will fit ,take it solw and you should be ok,,,hope this helps,,,dave

source a good second hand hub it will save you time in the end.if all are sheared beats trying to drilling them all out .

all of them are snapped i might go the scrappy tomorow see if i can get a hub, how much r they ? thanks for the info

IF YOU GO TO THE SCRAPPY for a new un make sure you get the bolts as well cos you cant buy em as i sed before they are rolled threads and peculiar to landrovers ,dont forget to torque em up right,if your motor is a series landy its 38ftlbs mate,it aint very tight it relys on bolt stretch to stop em coming loose best of luck mate,,,,dave

We had the same thing on our Defenders. All the bolts came out by gently tapping them round with a hammer and a small chisel/punch. Once the heads have sheared off, whats left may be surpisingly loose. Give it a try, you might be surprised.

theres no head on them they have fell off somewere its just the body of the screw inside the thread. can i still drive it with shaft out? just to get it to my mate who is fixing it for me

Should still drive in diff lock...

Thats right. Once the head has sheared off, the thread thats left has no tension on it. Providing its not too badly rusted in, you should be able to punch it round. Once you've got it unscewed a couple of threads, grip it with some mole grips and wind it out.

i have just drove it round to my mates with the shaft out, i took it out so it wouldnt fall out an get lost and it drove the same with no noise's i got told i would have to drive it in diff ?

will it drive out of diff lock if it does then theres your problem another thig you can try (not very easy on small bolts) is drilling a hole in the center of the bolt and taping in an old alan kry in and unserew in it

Hi if it drove without putting it in difflock then that suggests it is stuck in locked position and this would have caused your bolts to snap in the first place if you replace the bolts without sorting difflock the same thing may happen again or even something worse.
