Bodywork

No it's a Safari roof, the idea was to prevent the Hot sun from baking the drivers & Passengers, and to force cooler air between the 2 skins when driven.

Always wondered the real purpose of them. Strange uk models have them - must have had good summers then. Kind of defeats the purpose though sticking alpine windows so more sun/heat gets in

This one lets cool air in, but also 'cooling' showers of water:) Must be something to do with the holes someone punched through it.

The rest of the body is pretty dented Land Raver, hence why I went into Halfords the other day and bought a big pot of Bondo.:D

Went to remove the old wing on Sunday arvo. Bolts rusted in nicely and access was a bit tricky, so took to the panel with an angle grinder:

One less factory panel around now. This was the sight behind it;

Hidden footwell nastiness

The best way to sort that footwell is to put a replacement panel back on, voila, rust is gone.

Sorted. The other footwell is gone so maybe at the end of the summer I'll sort them out. I put stainless bolts back on the wing for ease next time. The ones into the bulkhead are awkward as hell to get back on.

Panel looks good Glyn, damn sight straighter than the one that came off;)

Yup should be useful to keep the old wing handy for patches.
stutab, im a total novice on bodywork but the panels are easy enough to swop. Not so simple to straighten them! Filler is your friend but ally doesnt half dent easy so buy a big tub.
Unless your handy at ally welding, its your only option i guess. But a few dents looks fitting on any landy

he aint gorra mf35 hiding in there too ? :)

No, he has got a ford 4000 that needs a new head/block, and lots of bits for the back

Nice one stutab. Looks like you may need some Jeys Fluid too:D

What was it like underneath?

Haven't looked, the door is falling off passenger side so know the bulkhead is shot. Was going to take the easy route and guessed would need new chassis, bulkhead, doors. Just hoping the engine will live again :confused:

On the tractor theme, if the engine is seized, use the old coca cola trick (pour it in the cylinders and leave for a day). That's what my father in law did on the Fergy and it worked a treat. Just remember to change the oil afterwards ;)

Finally a use for Coca-Cola, and people actually feed that to there kids

Does that work with petrol and diesel as I got a 3.5 EFI rangy off him as well.

A bit off topic 90truckcab but I have two Fergies which I have restored: a TEA and a TED. I have now moved up to a 1977 Series 3 88! If you haven't found it yet the Friends of the Ferguson Heritage forum is a mine of information on Fergies. I joined this forum as I have already found a wealth of valuable advice - this thread on bodywork is exactly what I needed as repainting is my major job for the summer.
Regards
Colin

yes, i come across friends of ferguson when lookin how to register my tractor, i am in process of writing them a letter to date my ted20 so i can apply for a v55/5 and a set of age related plates as mine have been long lost, good luck with your ser3 resto, i had a good time doin mine :) http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f6/well-needed-restoration-my-series-2a-76144.html

What a story - I have already read it twice end to end! If your TED ends up that good it will be fantastic! FoFH gave me the necessary paperwork for my TED which now has age related plates. FoFH can also give you a licence to mix TVO for legal use on the road - not recommended however as unless it gets really hot, unburned fuel tends to creep past the rings to dilute the oil.

I plan to start rubbing down my paintwork today.

Did a bit more this morning; some filling and sanding back around the new wing outer. I may be imagining it but the whole wing seems to sit lower than before? Could be just me.

Just the rest of the body to go (bulkhead, doors and rear tub).:)

Looking ok actually. It needs flatting back and a couple more coats but I'm happy with how it looks so far. I am finding more rust as I go over the steel but its nothing that can't be sorted in the next couple of years. Gonna sort the wheels out as well as they are pretty rusty. Got some white that will go on them after a good wire brush session. Or should I go black? Anyone got any thoughts on white weller 8 spokes vs black ones?:cool2:
