Having a dry Saturday and a forecast of no rain for the next few days (first time in a long time) I thought I'd start to do something about the cosmetics of my S3. It looks pretty rough and has obviously been abused offroad over the years. So I thought some filler, fresh paint and removal of the horrible bits stuck to it by the PO should do as a start. Its dented to sh!t but I'm not too concerned about that, still a bit of filler in the major ones won't hurt.:)

This is her as I got her, not sure about the spots, bar, cages for lights and general tired paintwork.

Removed spots, bar and cages. Painted grill black (all trim is gonna be black).

This wing was quite dented, sanded it off

Filled and flatted back (not the best job but not bad for first ever go!)

Test painted some of my newly acquired olive NATO paint with a brush, roller is the way forwards for the rest of the car.

Still a way to go though and this is by no means gonna look perfect, just better than before.

cheers

Its a bit tricky as galvanised stuff can be weird to paint. I know if its been galvanised recently then you'll want to use a special primer to prep them. Mine are ancient so I figured a rub down and black satin hammerite should do the job. I know hammerite isn't popular these days but I've used it on boat trailers that take a load of abuse and I've always found it a decent finish and pretty durable. For DIY stuff and if your not too picky like me, its a decent bet for metal painting.

The windscreen trim on mine has been touched up with horrible silver paint. I'm not a fan of silver paint on trim as it just looks cheap and nasty. At least if its black, its tidy! So black it is for me.

I wanted to paint the whole landy matt black but couldn't be bothered with changing the V5 and notifying insurers etc... So its going to be army green :D

Tidy little Station Wagon :) I've been playing with my galv bits and drill mount wire brush and they come up pretty good. I was then going to go over them with some matt lacquer to stop any bits rusting where the galv has gone.

You could use cold-galvanising paint on the cappings, apparantly it goes straight on top of existing galv and looks quite good, going to use it on mine when it comes to that point in the rebuild

Looking good.

What are you doing with the galv cappings? Need to do mine but not sure what to use.

i've just done mine this weekend, did a quick job with them but they look good so far.

took them right off, and wire brushed them with the drill, then used etch prime spray followed by smooth silver hammerite

will rivet them I've painted the body

Don't wirebrush good galv, you'll strip it off. Zinc rich sprays will chip easier than hot dipped.

If the galv is going and it's starting to rust, then i'd get them redipped. If it's fine but tatty, then imo either live with it or paint them (without stripping the galv off) :)

that thought crossed my mind but i did it anyway. there was a lot of surface rust and a thick layer of silver/grey paint in patches so i just brushed the rust and the paint off, the metal condition was perfect under there.

Hopefully it won't turn out too bad, if it does i'll look into sorting it properly in the future?

also has anyone ever seen the cappings chromed? that would look great

Thanks for the wing Glyn, much appreciated. Enjoy the beers man :)

When you get her sorted and you fancy a trip to the seaside, give me a shout. If you need a hand with anything, similarly, just give me a shout.

Cheers
Al

I'm glad it's going to a good use Al :) It's going to be the only bit of Land Rovey I've got that's moving around! Hopefully with the outer panel on that one and your headlight section you can get one good wing together for it.

I've got more bits in the garden or chucked in my junk pile so get in touch if you need anything more.

:beer2: Thanks for the beers, I've stashed a couple in the garage for the weekend heheh Hopefully I'll be rolling in the summer and will deffo be down :)

Tidied the safari roof today. Too dented to even bother trying to fix that aspect so just a sand down and a lick of limestone paint (came with the car) was in order.

Before, check out the nice little crustose lichens that made their home on the roof. Sorry guys, gotta go....

As long as you don't go too close it looks ok. A lot tidier than before anyway. But man the roof is dented, makes me think its been ar$e up in its life?

Rest of the body next, then the wheels. Then maybe the interior which is fu##ed too.:5bbeatdeadhorse5:

Got its good fair share of battle scars on its lid! But then again, was that not the whole idea of that second roof skin? It's curious though as the rest of the Landy seems so straight! Probably a woman previous owner who kept on attempting multi story car parks :p
