Hi.

Ive decided to paint my landy with a gloss roller but im a bit confused as to what goes where and in what order.

I have read pages of bumph on body repairs and paint but it all seems to be different or not applicable or.. not exactly clear?

the car has never been repainted so there isnt loads of old paint to get off.

I don't really want to take the whole car down to bear metal, there are a few dents to fill and it needs paint.

I have etching primer. but i got it in a spray can by mistake... does this matter?

The etching primer goes onto to any bare metal, but what about the paint surrounding it? is it bad to etch prime over the old paint?

also. what about the original paint that is ok? do i have to primer over that as well or can i paint over it?

I'm assuming i have to sand the whole car to a certain degree to create a key?

and lastly. i got some 1k stopper. does this go over the filler or over the primer or fill in cracks before painting? i was told to get it, but what for?

do i etch prime and then apply filler and then apply stopper and then apply paint?

I think this covers most things, but not sure which order to do it all in.

many thanks

many thanks. but it because of this article (and others like it) i have bought so much stuff and have so many questions.
most just isn't applicable. the choice of paints in land rover marine blue is limited to us average folk so i have purchased the (recommended by another member) synthetic enamel from paddock spares.
the article tells you everything you need to know if you want to make your own primer, but doesn't say much about what to do with it in different circumstances. do i really have to mask off every dent and chip?
its just too much info (if there is such a thing).

Hi.

so long as it is compatible with the primer that's all that matters
The etching primer goes onto to any bare metal, but what about the paint surrounding it? is it bad to etch prime over the old paint?
Don't be too concerned about getting it on other painted surfaces, etch primer is normally fairly thin

also. what about the original paint that is ok? do i have to primer over that as well or can i paint over it?
I would recommend primering over it if you have the paint to do it all the paint will last longer with out bubbling or chipping

I'm assuming i have to sand the whole car to a certain degree to create a key?
Yes to get a lasting finish that does not flake.

and lastly. i got some 1k stopper. does this go over the filler or over the primer or fill in cracks before painting? i was told to get it, but what for?
I am guessing what you mean by stopper is a smooth plaster. It normally is to fill the pin holes left behind in the normal filler. If so apply to the filler before priming to fill those pin holes or even once primer is on for any spots you have missed, then once filled and sanded cover again with primer

do i etch prime and then apply filler and then apply stopper and then apply paint?
I sand what needs to be filled back to bare metal then filler stopper then primers

I think this covers most things, but not sure which order to do it all in.

many thanks

Hope this helps

yet another process is to tack-off after sanding. this is to remove all traces of dust which will stop your paint from sticking. brushing down will remove most dust, to get the rest off (tacking) use meths on a rag ang wipe the body down (you can use thinners if you move quickly), you will be supprised at how much dust this will lift.
currently doin a body job my self, must post some more pics!

I spray on wax and grease remover before any paint goes down. Get yourself a pressure spray like in this photo in the lower right. Makes a real easy job of it and avoids getting fish eyes in the paint

Great advice thanks.
It seems i haven't got everything after all. I got etching primer, but not normal primer.

I have ordered some 1k high build etching primer with good adhesion (especially aluminum) and high coverage... sounded good to me :)

i am now off to practice filling a few dents on a spare landy door to see if the filler falls out when i kick it :)

many thanks all and especially to rappy1

Thats alright. make sure when you sand to use a large sanding block. even more important on the landy with all the flat surfaces. good prep will repay you later

on the subject of painting, can anyone lead me in the right direction regarding the engine paint, i have looked and looked but cant find what i am after without having to bake the paint either in over (not got one big enough) or with engine running (bit hard when its in bits) - i am wanting to paint it blue ripple/hammered, i understand that certain parts of the engine ancilliaries can be done with just normal hammerite but what about the other parts that will get hot/warm etc..
