Bmw N47 diesel swap

I have a RRC 200tdi and would very much like to transplant a BMW N47 engine into it. I’m keen on using a later 160-180hp engine. Has this been done? Is it possible? I know the engine, in its early form, found its way into freelander, etc.
Any thought would be appreciated. Apart from ‘just leave the 200tdi in mate…’ and stuff like that. thanks
 
The Freelander 1 TD4 got the M47R (R meaning Rover), which was a cheaper version of the M47 used in some BMW vehicles of the same era.
I imagine the M47 could be made to fit the gearbox you have, with a suitable adapter plate and clutch.

You have to ask yourself, is there a better engine to use, as the M47 is hardly a powerful or reliable unit, particularly as they'll all have high mileage nowadays.
Maybe use a more modern and powerful engine from PSA?
 
Agree with Nodge that there are probably better engines to go with, especially as the N47 is a car engine the power & torque will be a little odd in a RR.
Maybe look at a 6cyl M57/N57? I expect getting any of these mounted to your gearbox will be a breeze compared to the electrical side of things.
BTW I'm not trying to talk you out of it, I'd love to see it done ;)
 
Thanks chaps. I was really thinking of the later 160-180hp engines. I have the 184hp engine in an E91 BMW and it’s got bags of torque and power. I was thinking that would be ideal in the RRC. I’ve been daily driving it for about the last year and day-dreaming about a cool engine swap. 6.5 GMC DV8 is a real contender, but I think the TD5 would be the sensible choice. I see you can buy wiring looms to separate the ECU where the TD5 isn’t native to the car.
The PSA option is interesting. Is that the TDV6? Has that been done?

I havent heard of the tdv6 being done, possibly due to its bad rep for crankshafts. TD5 would be an excellent choice also because they are so tuneable and would be a much easier job to fit

No, that breaks crankshafts.:eek:

The PSA DW12 as used in the Freelander 2, early Evoque and Discovery Sport.
It's relatively reliable, and makes 400nm of torque at 1800 RPM.
