blue smoke!

Hi, its a 2006 with a 130,000 on the clock(march, last of the Mk1 series). have kept an eye on the oil level but seems to be stable, but is chewing diesel like it was going out of fashion. Probably on reflection the smoke is more greyish than blue but does leave an oily deposite on the ground.the smoke does disappear when the engine is hot. Iv'e also removed the ego and put in a blanker.
 
When was the crank case filter replaced and PCV valve cleaned? That's the most likely cause of blue smoke in the TD4 ;)
 
Is the crank case filter the one at the front of the engine looks a bit like a bottle (or old SU carb shape.) or is this just the oil filter?As you can probably tell i'm pretty new to all of this

No, that's the oil filter. The crank case filter is under the cover on the top of the engine.
It's built into cam cover.
 
Yes, oil level hasn't moved and was changed in july as soon as i bought it as there was no history with the vehicle Which was a bit of a concern
so i got it checked by a mech but this has only started over the last 2/3 weeks
 
Has the inlet manifold been removed for cleaning recently? If the inlet manifold is coked up, it will draw oil out of the crankcase breather circuit.

It could be a sign that a turbo seal is beginning to fail.

No. It's very easy to remove and should really be cleaned out properly every service. The EGR valve causes the inlet manifold to gunk up solid with thick soot. This is the most likely cause of blue smoke, if everything else is OK.
 
I changed the pcv valve on mine when it was bleaching blue smoke when cold

Hi everyone. Thanks for being so helpful. Will start at square 1 and replace all filters (even though they've been done recently). I think the only filter that wasn't changed is the fuel filter so i'll start with that, then move on to all the other suggestions. will let everyone know how I get on. Thought i wouldn't be doing this after all these years .
But hey ho, We never stop learning do we!.
 
Definitely clean out the inlet manifold. I expect it's clogged up, causing the engine to draw on the breather system instead.
