My 2.2 defender was burning oil and smoking heavily until the engine ran away and after it had stopped the engine will not restart and was knocking heavily.

And I just want to know what would be the best course of action going forward. As I am aware that lots of the rebuilt engines are done with cheap pattern parts and are regarded as low quality.
And I know that new engines are an option along with remanufactured and they are typically held in higher stead. I had also considered getting a second hand engine that was on lower mileage which is obviously a risk as do not know what life it has lived or why it has been pulled to start with.
Also would it be possible or feasible to repair my current engine regarding its problems (it is on 150,000 miles and was used to power a pto winch) or is one of the above options preferable?

If any one could advise on best cause of action going forward it would be much appreciated.
Thanks Finn.
