Bleeding the fuel system.

I am about to change the fuel filter on my '05 TD4, is the system in these self bleeding or will I have to manually?

tis indeed self priming, might take a few goes for it to fire up, but it will take care of itself.

My friends Tyre Lever and Mr Hammer beg to differ!

Cycle the ignition a few times before starting it for best bleeding results.

The replacement part I have is an inline canister unit with pipe connections at either end, what needs beating?

It sits inside a plastic casing and the old one can be tight to get out. It just needs hitting out really.

Lubricate the new one and slide it in.

I lubricated it and sliped it in, after I gave it a good banging ........

When you switch on for the first time after changing the filter you'll hear the pump running and a 'gurgling' coming from the filter.

This may well take over 2 minutes to calm down.

Switch off, wait a minute and then switch on again - more 'gurgling'!

Do this a few times before you try actually starting up.

The engine should now fire up and keep running.

If you try starting right away the engine will fire but will stutter and shake like hell to a stop.

Like I said, I have done it, I let the pump run until it stopped then turned the key and after a few turns it started just fine.
