Black sealant for bell housing grommet?

Hi there!

I see everyone uses a black sealant for the grommet on the bell housing although I cant work
out what it is. I did a "sealant" search for the bell housing grommet but I couldn't find anything.

I'm assuming whatever it is, is better than silicone, so everyone uses it.

I'm hoping the "????" isn't an 'are you for real?' question.

The only reason I ask is I've had a few series 2a bell housings, all with the same matt black sealant around the cross shaft grommet.
It's not the rubber it'self as it exceeds the radius of the grommet, so I'm assuming it's an adhesive or sealant.

Cheers for the X1 suggestion I'll look into that. I just want to make sure I'm using the right stuff.

This isn't my gearbox but it shows the matt black substance. It could be silicone, I'm not sure. It seems to set rather brittle and I was gingerly chipping it off with a hammer and screwdriver. I was testing two bell housings for the correct one and they both had the same stuff seen here.

??? Meant, sealant, what sealant. I haven't had the gear box out of mine so I wasn't aware there was any sealant used on the bell housing. I also didn't know what grommet you was referring to. I didn't think the question was stupid or anything, I just didn't understand what you were getting at.

No trouble, I sometimes get paranoid about things people type when you start a new post on a forum encase it's something I should know, haha.
I see a lot of people who get the old telling off for starting pointless threads & I was hoping I wasn't one of them. :)

they all do, i guess its some form of bituminous sealant,silicone will do fine

It's definitely gonna be one of those things and I'm sure they're probably just as good as each other. I'll just have to make my mind up. :D

Incidentally, they're producing something similar to Dum Dum here:

I imagine it nowhere near as good as the original stuff but we live in hope. There's also a few rolls or original Dum Dum on eBay, although, £15+£8 postage seems a tad steep.
 
Dumdum isn't supposed to set, but does skin over, so probly not that. There's some grey stuff between the floors and seatbox joints, and between panels...that kind of sets, probably something similar. Still don't know what it is...:)

That yack on a roll...I've not had a lot of luck with that. I had a new rear door from SP, and they glazed it with that. Kinda works...I finished it and filled the missing bits with dumdum (out of the tin I've had for about 10years. Not much left now...)

Does tigerseal set? I've never used it.

Incidentally my 2a box had the grommet but no sealant. But, the rubber of the grommet was very slimy like, kind of melted to the case!
 
sikaflex is great stuff. Brilliant for stuff that is subject to vibration and moderate amounts of movement. Would be good for the front of the roof where the rivets invariably break. Silicone tends to unstick on at least one of the surfaces, whereas sikaflex wouldnt. No replacement for rivietting the roof backon of course but its just an example.
 
I use sika flex or any own brand gutter sealant. They are rubber or bitumous based not silcone so they stay gooey and you can separate the joints easily. I run a bead on all the floor, tunnel joints to seal them and it also stops a lot or rattles.
