Hi all

If I come out straight away and say I drive a Volvo 940 estate, please keep reading. If it helps, think of it as a lowered, stretched Land Rover 90...

I'm after some advice on fitting some extra lights to add to the Volvo's pathetic main beams, and thought that this was probably the best place to find some experts. Realise that there's already a load of threads on specific fittings, so please don't feel forced to go into detail. I just need a shove in the right direction.

Basically, I'm working in the depths of Scotland for the next six months, and currently the drive to and from work in the dark gets a bit exciting. When the deer start wandering onto the road, I'm going to end up with one in my lap. I don't want to change my standard light bulbs as they're fine for everyday use, so I'm thinking of adding a pair of spots to come on with the main beam. They could either go low down on the front bumper, or ideally on a roof bar that I can take off when I don't need them. I'm not fussed about drilling holes etc, so what are the pros/cons of either option?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Rob

:welcome: . must admit you have guts to post on a landy forum with a Volvo problem  the guys will offer advice eventually .. well i think they will ... keep your sense of humour tho... be prepared for p*** takin first.. after the initial shocked reaction they will talk sense :D:D:D

S'alright. When all's said and done, I can fit 7 folks in mine without the guys in the back suffering serious internal organ damage. From my experiences in the back of some landys, you can't all say the same :p

roof bars will be a royal pain with the wire through roof (trust me I've pulled headlinings)
I would suggest a couple of spots on the front. you can take a trigger feed from the headlight and feed the relay from battery with a suitable fuse.
Nowdays most motor factors can supply a pre wired relay kit cheaply

couple of 100w spots should sort it

volvo = defender :multiply:

as above, i'd go for some (top of) bumper mounted spots - easier to wire, no light reflection off bonnet and so on.

or why not try a bonnet pod like the 80's and 90's rally cars had? theres companies that will make them for you if you can afford them (£200 for a 4 spot pod) but they look pretty cool and give off plenty of light, and some of them are removable.

if you have front fogs then you could take the spotlight feed from them, no need for any in-car wiring then. take the power feed from the fog into a relay as the switch live. if you dont have fogs fitted then most of the wiring should be there anyway, all you'll need is the switch and fusebox relay.

I have got front fogs, but I can't have the rear fogs on without the front (it's the same switch), so I can't really afford to steal the wiring unless I want to light up a load of mist every time I turn on the foglights. I'm already resigned to doing some wiring.

My concern with the bumper mounted option is that they'll get taken out by stone chips. Although I hadn't thought about glare from the bonnet, so cheers for that.

As I said before, pre wired relay kit needs one wire connected to main beam (trigger ) fused live to battery and earth. leaving only an output to light and earth return on spot locally ffs how hard can it be.

**** me how many spots have you seen broken by stones or headlights for that matter. Your making a simple situation difficult.
worse still you think a volvo is a defender no chance.

astras are well known for having their fogs smashed by stones, some of the old GSi fogs were over £60 a side used on ebay when i needed 1!! newer cars seem to be ALOT better tho, not seen many newer cars with smashed lights.

so buy a cheap set of spots, like a bunch of purveyor of doom here. We answered the question politely.
It's a volvo ffs not a land rover.

yep id go for a set of spots on the bumper, a trip to your local car accessory shop should have all you need

make sure you use correct wire and fuses for the watts the lights draw

Cheers for the suggestions. Looks like the bumper option would be the best bet then.

I'll let you get back to bigger toys now...

your ere now... might as well stay and join the rest of us havin a laugh on ere .... you may even be converted :D

So you're not worried that I might convert some of you over to the volvo way of thinking instead? I have heated seats you know. And an exhaust secured by morrison's washing line, admittedly, but that's by-the-by...
