It looks like I need to get a 4 bike carrier for the P38. What do people recommend given the split tail? Main consideration would be boot access and not to impinge the rear wiper. Also I don't see that it would be used that often apart from school hols and the occasional weekend jaunt.

I have had a very quick look at units that fit on the tow ball and tilt but nothing more than that. Thoughts please?

I have a Thule EuroRide 3 bike tow bar carrier which works well enough. It's possible to tilt it down while full of bikes so you can open the top tailgate but of course not the bottom. Works well enough. I used to have bikes on a roof rack on another car, but if you do that with a RR you need to carry steps with you to access the bikes.

I have a Thule 3 bike rack, extended to 4. This is ok as the bikes we have are light enough. It's a tow bar mount which is very useful in terms of not needing to life the bikes too far and fuel economy vs roof mounted carriers. Car ferries are also cheaper due to lower headroom. I've not had it on my LR, but if I do the tilt isn't much good as I have a defender!

I have a bike rack hanging in the garage complete with two bikes and they have been there for over twenty years. In my humble opinion its the best place for all bikes and possibility for the lycra clad helmeted brigade who have a complete disregard for any other road/pavement user. Perhaps I should have started a new thread:mad::D:p

I still manage to cycle to work in a suit and tie with no need for Lycra. Amazing, isn't it?

Please Sir, Can I be excluded from the lycra brigade? I wear cargo shorts, polo shirt and the obligatory helmet. However...........l do not have a bike, I have a,trike (see link) and I am very courteous to drivers and I find 98% of them are courteous back.In fact usually the trike puts a smile on their faces. :D It might be that the trike is a novelty to most people ,or it could be that unlike a bike , I don't/ can't cut up the side of traffic and try to be as aware of and respectful to motorised traffic, as I hope they will be to me.
In keeping with the original question, I don't use a bike rack, mine folds and goes in veh. :)

Sounds like you are spoiling it for the others.

All the cyclists who spent years riding three abrest down narrow roads the waving their fists at motorists who can't pas them, and now you introduce good manners and undo all of their efforts.
Shame on you.
I hang my head in shame and take my punishment of not allowed to wear lycra, with heavy heart.

Definitely get the 3 bike carrier that extend to 4 bikes. Thurle I think. Costs more but worth it. Locks on tow bar so secure, bikes locked in place for security. Fits on the tow bar on my P38a and the wife's Zafira. Nothing beats having to get something out of the boot with family and boot fully loaded, click the foot pedal on the bike rack and it leans away from the car on cables. Once item received, takes a few seconds to click back in place. (hold them as go down, don't let them just drop), access both parts if the split tailgate.

Stores in shed, everytime we get it out I'm glad I didn't scimp on a non tilting version. If only 1 or 2 bikes used regulary, then overkill. Also makes a longer safety crash zone to the rear if someone goes into you rear?
