i want to put a bigger intercooler on my 300tdi defender

i dont think i could afford a proper 300tdi full width one at around 400 but am happy to mke a few brackets eetc if i could get one of another landy or car etc and make it fit

any suggestions-is there any vehicles that a intercooler is aa popular fit out of

i have a td5 one hanging around here-how hard would this be to fit

In a diesel engine, for optimal performance you want the air as cold as you can, so the bigger your intercooler the cooler your air/exhaust gas the more power you'll get.

but for a start -
for more power you just turn up the fuelling on the injector pump and wind in your actuator rod, more boost + fuel = bhp

the intercooler will help the denser, (cooler), the air = the more power

a diesel engine doesn't run a great deal of boost because of the lower compression engine ...

i have already de egr ed it andturned the pump up a bit but thought the next step was the intercooler

want to lave the turbo alone as i can see it causing problems

ill have a look at the toyota ones

pointless modification..anyone who says that just fitting a larger intercooler made a difference is talking cr@p.

I wouldn't say its pointless but there are better modifications to start with and an increased capacity intercooler isn't really needed till these mods are done...

need to do exhaust at same time, what goes in has to go out. You can not put more air fuel in than can get out............. it is called back pressure. One of several limiting factors for more hp

think your getting confussed on what an IC does, it only cools the air, fitting a larger IC won't actually increase airflow (although it will increase lag due to a larger volume between turbo and cylinders), the cooler air will be denser allowing more oxygen into the cylinder per stroke.

As for back pressure, well, back pressure doesn't really exsist, it is more about exhaust gas velocity, this is what an exhaust needs to be tuned for, it allows the pulse affect of multiple cylinder firing to provide a natural resonance in its exit that runs within the engines harmonics, basically its about having a large enough bore to allow gases out but a small enough bore to make sure there not still there when the next pulse of gasses comes through, you can't just whack a maassive pipe on thinking you will get massive power gains, its all very scientific...

'backpressure' is a term that seems to hang around but actually means nothing to do with what people think it is (it use to be more relevant for 2 stroke engines where fuel mixture would get pulled into the exhaust and then bushed back into the cylinder, doesn't work like this on 4 strokes though)
