Best tyres for an old Ninety??

Doubt if there will be snow here. Only a mile from the sea, and nearly as far south as you can get in UK. we hardly ever get frost, so snow on the ground is a once every ten year thing. Sometimes it will lie on the high ground inland for a few days, rare here! :)
What we will get is lots of mud, that is same every year.

Pretty simple, they are based on an old military tyre. It is those lugs round the edge that do the work. Similar to a tractor tyre, they clear the mud sideways, so that the middle part of the tyre can grip!

Copy's of Firestone S.A.T. [ super all traction] the trial's competitors favorite back in the day. They were crossply and rubbish on the road though.

Not too noisy on the road, either! :)
What I really wanted was to get a 7.50 16, less and less are being made, and they are harder to find, and getting dearer! :(
Thought about Fedima Extreme, they are like an old simex, I think. Lot of tread blocks, though, thought they might be a bit howly on the road. They are more for trialling and extreme off roading anyway.

Crossply 7.50 16 were an option for mine, and I think yours as new. They are even harder to find now than 7.50R16!

Avon still make the Rangemaster, which is fine on the road and reasonable off it. Crossply tyres on a wet road are an experience I plan not to repeat.

Had crossplys on a few series before! Radials were an improvement! :D
I thought about rangemasters, avon are usually good, they aren't cheap, and I wanted a bit more off road bias than that. Mainly for farm use, and I have other wheels for road.

Got two sets of them anorl! :D And a set of modular with Insa dakars!:)

I swap em around according to need. And you are right, AT with plenty of tread are good in snow, also for towing.
Doesn't snow more en once in ten years here anyway! :(

me too :)

i just gave a friend a 5 set of avon rangemasters. 2 still had the spikes on! (i must be feeling generous) plus 4 randoms i had

i'm trying to just have a set of 235/85r16 ats and some 10.5 muds, oh and 3 6.50's for the trailer and 2 snow ones for the car.

unfortunately, the 10.5 tyres are all worn and the 7.50s on are getting low.

garden looks like a scrapyard :/

Yep, I try and farm them out too, Managed to lend Mart one of my sets of AT on standard rims! :)

Generous! :eek: Rangemasters are dear, priced some before I got these, although they weren't as aggressive as I wanted.

Think I have almost 50 total tyres and wheels, 13 for the 90 alone, trailers, tractor, cars, farm trailer, muckspreader. I must be one of the rubber industries best customers! :D

Very true, usually better with narrower tyres when it comes to the snow and ice here in the UK, that way they can cut through to the ground below, but if you're in super-soft, super deep snow which you see in some areas of the world, better to have a big ass tyre with one massive footprint to keep you floating above the surface and out of trouble, something like these maybe :)

Be a while til we see snow like that in Kernow! :D

Myself I like AT in British snow conditions, decent tread and go slow, good control! :) Up where you are proper snow tyres are maybe a better idea!

I like a narrow tyre on a landy, never have anything wider than 215 on the Ninety, think the Disco has 235s, but I only use it for towing.

I'm the same as you, I like the narrower tyres for both look and ride. But I actually have the BFG A/T's on mine at the minute:

as you say keep in control and go slow, try not to spin wheels or break traction if possible, can get through anything within reason, and never plough through a snow drift because the BMW's underneath won't appreciate it :p
