I'll be driving back to Wales at the end of the week towing an 86 Defender 110 with a towing A-frame dolly.

I want to make sure I have it secured to the best place possible.

I've tried it on the front crossmember but it seems to move around a lot.

Thanks in advance.

The towed car counts as a trailer - and being (considerably) over 750kg must have brakes fitted and operational on all wheels in contact with the ground.

Annoyingly the guy I got it off had said that he's used it plenty of times across distance to tow transits and other vans. Dodgy. I'm sure it'll come in handy if I need to rescue a smaller car in the future.

I've used one similar several times to recover vehicles locally, it's plated at 2400kg but of course that's the SWL of the frame and doesn't imply anything about other regulations.

ive towed a disco with one, but i had the wife in the disco operating the steering and brakes.

You also strap it to the axle not the frame

If you had someone with you, what's wrong with using a bit of string to tow it to a safe place where you can stick it on a trailer?
