Like you I only rarely have peeps in the back, and then I just tell them to put their feet on the small trolley jack that is there! Soft tarmac, mud etc is the nightmare of all recoveries. Which is why when doing MSA recovery we always carried a small trolley jack when we needed to lift a vehicle sufficiently to get a chain or strap round a decently strong suspension part, to effect a recovery. Happened when the "recovery point" was made of tissue paper.I use a trolley jack but I don't have any peeps in the back. I also have the genuine one which is also very good. Not the first time its sank into soft tarmac on a hot day or soft ground, so I have keep a piece of timber to place underneath them.
