Hi all, ive been looking around for some new hinges for my defender, because the salt from the last month or so, has made a nice mess of my lower hinges especially (standard and painted) *crap salt*
Ive heard that the aluminum ones are good, but are around £200, and Ive seen some stainless ones on ebay for a similar price.
Just wondering if anyone has either aluminum or stainless hinges, and if their worth the steep price? Cheers :D

I have these not fitted yet but they are the later TD5 type with a nylon internal sleeve that helps prevent friction. Good price also.

Cheers for the reply, but really i want something 'rustproof' for obvious resons, sorry should have said that in the original post, cheers again :)

If you want something rustproof, then you have two choices -
Really expensive stainless hinges
Really expensive Aluminium hinges

I'm not in the habit of spending upwards of 500 quid on hinges, so I'll just take the old ones off, blast them back to bare metal and paint them again. You could buy a complete set of spare ones, so you don't have to take the car off the road to do it. that way you'll always have a spare set of ready painted hinges to fit, when your current ones start to look shabby...

Agreed. And the later type shouldnt rust as easily.

I agree, maybe zinc plated ones that have a good layer of strong paint might do? £30 for a set of zinc plated off ebay!
cheers for all the feeback guys :D

Another thing to think of. How east would it be to undo four bolts and steal your hinges? If you had stupidly expensive ones, I think you'd cry! There's no way to really secure them; if you used allen bolts and hammered ball bearings in, they'd be secure, but you'd never get them off to repair / clean / grease etc!

Just buy standard, or zinc ones and spray em - its a ballache, but that defender ownership!!!

.:D.Ha fugkin Ha.:D.

I can't believe anyone seriously spends that kind of money on door hinges. The world has truly gone ****in mad.

Some people will pay... these are the ones that Leadfarmer mentions and I got around to fitting mine this week. I got the white ones and gave them a couple of coats of BT grey out of a can and left them for a week to dry properly.

With the stainless fittings I think these are spot on... they are the Td5 hinges, I reckon these will not be weeping rust for a few years unlike straight aftermarket ones you have to paint up yourself from bare metal.

£250 for stainless? I like these for £5 each :)

I have never replaced the middle doors on a 110 before...once the doors are off the front hinges on the bulkhead can be drilled off if all else fails. The remainder of the screw will come out with the captive nut.
The middle door hinges are held by captive plates... The top hinges came off no problem... the lower ones took a while. What ever you do.. do not be tempted to drill the heads off the screws on the bottom hinge.
The land rover seems to built around this bottom captive plate.... I have no idea how to get at it but if I had taken both screws out it would have dropped.. gone!
So I just took one screw out... moved the hinge over and put the new screw in while I took the hinge off.

They do not come apart.... lay them on some wood rather than paper and do a couple of light coats and leave them over night. Then do the back... just the bit you will be able to see when fitted. Paint will be soft for a few days.... but you have factory paint underneath so no worries.... you can get a bottle of touch up to match when you get your spray paint made up.

Dont over paint them... light coverings only and they wont stick. Dont use a brush.... spray is better and lighter covering finish
