hi all what size or type of battery would be best for a 1983 3 series 2.2 petrol Land Rover as I think the one I have is very under powered .

Thanks

the advice is usually to get the most powerful in terms of cold cranking amps cca and amp hours ah. that you can afford and will fit dimensionally

some of the ones for defenders go up to 100 ah and should fit in the tray, I wouldn't get less than 70ah, had a 50ah in my s3 diesel it wasn't really up to the job on very cold winter days

assuming the new one you put up fits - you would have to measure it, looks like it would and the seller says it will - that should be ok - however, it is the same power as the one you have in there, so if you think the existing one isn't powerful enough you may want to go for more ah.

it might be your existing one is tired and weak so a new one of the same power would be ok.

this is more meaty, again you would have to measure to see if it would fit.

no idea if the make is any good though

From my experience - with a fairly worn petrol S3 - any battery that fits in the tray with the right connectors should do fine. You don't need a lot of cranking amps if the engine is a bit down on compression. As long as the battery is new and holds charge well, the alternator is producing enough voltage to charge the battery and all the connections are good then a 70Ah should be fine - as long as you're not running too much extra stuff.

Your current battery and the one you are looking at on ebay are both 70Ah 570. I've just taken a 70Ah 540 spec battery off my 300Tdi, which it has happily started for many years. I've put a heavier duty one on, but to be honest it's a bit OTT.
The compression in a 300Tdi will be far greater than the petrol 2.2 Series engine, so that spec battery should turn your petrol engine over no bother.

There's a guy local to us, who is a bit of an electrical wizard, and knows his batteries inside and out. Back in the day, he used to sell Fulmen, which were made from virgin lead, and used to last well over ten years in our experience. He now sells Varta and Fiamm, but only in the OEM spec - which, he tells me, have more CCA than the non OEM ones. We're currently all Varta, but have had Fiamm in the past and they have been Ok - the current Varta seem very good to us, but.... famous last words

im running a Exide endurance battery maintenance free 750cca 90ah. only cost me $140 aud. every few years when i need a new battery the cca rating seems to be higher and higher, i remember the same battery i had roughly 10 years was around 600 or so cca.

Competition between manufacturers to attract customers.
Not sure what the location of the battery is like for a series 3. Bigger capacity batteries are generally physically bigger so OP just needs to make sure whatever he gets will fit in the available space. ( I think this was said earlier)

so I think first I need to get this battery checked as no idea how old. I gave it a full charge and when I turned the engine over it did just about turn over once or twice but if I try turning it over too many times , that's when that horrible green/yellow gets so hot it starts to melt. ( the car did start ) but no more starting until I know the cables setup etc.

thanks
