I think my belt tensioner is on its way out as there is an odd noise coming from the driver side which goes away when I use the good old fashioned WD40. has any bod changer these. how easy are they to change as well as roughly how much do they cost and where is the best place to get them

Cheers

What sort of noise is it ??? if it's screeching it could be a damp belt. Are you sure it's coming from the tensioner ??? as you have your water pump, alternator, power steering pump, and air compressor, down there as well.

Cheers for getting back so quick. The noise is more of a squeak, squeak, squeak and when I give the belt a quick spay it goes away for a few minutes. However as you say there is so much bits there I well tomorrow strip the lining out and stick my head in there to try and make sure.

Is it a TD4 ???. I would have thought if it was the tensioner or any of the others down there with a bearing on the way out, it would sound like a rumble/grinding noise. Strange when you spray it with WD40 the noise goes away for a few minutes. When were the belts changed last ???

Don't stick your head in to far, don't want to end up scalping yourself lol.

It's a 99 2Ltr diesel, I thought that it might be the belt also.

only had it 4 weeks no paperwork for any work done at any time absolutely nothing it does look as though it has not been looked afterso i am working my way through it changing and repairing things. Want to try and restore it to some sort of normality.

cheers in advance for any advice

i'm not sure what belt set-up you have on your freelander, I'm only familiar with the BMW TD4 engine which has two auxilary belts. I would advise to change the belt/belts to be on the safe side, with the belts off you can have a feel around the different pullies to see if there is any noticable roughness when you turn the pully, you should be able to feel it when you turn it with your hand.

Somebody will be along soon with more knowledge that me.

Hi,
I have the same problem just now but i have the 1.8 engine in an '04.....changed both aux belts (alt & ac/power steering)....took the top cover off to see the timing belt & sprayed some silicon grease on the cam tensioner & waterpump & the noise went instantly......but after a few minutes the noise came back.

I think somebody has cut corners before & changed the timing belt but not the tensioner.....so this Saturday the timing belt/tensioner & water pump is getting changed....fingers crossed this cures it....
