When I start the Discovery from cold there is a wurring noise (not squealing) from the belt area when I accelerate or move the steering wheel. When the wheel is turned enough for the corner the noise stops, which indicates its load activated. After a few minutes of driving (5-10) the noise stops. A garage suggested that I spray the belt with Hycote Belt Slip. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

I,d put a new belt on it !.

Mine was " twittery " on damp mornings and when it got wet.

Its a really easy job, whip of the fan, put a socket on the tensioner and back it off, ( do a little sketch of how the belt goes ), and re-fit the new one.

I asked the garage to look at it during the MOT in November and a new belt was fitted. It was better for a couple of days and then started again.
 
I assume you have powersteering fluid in there and the steering box is all bled etc.

It can also be caused by a knackered pully. Has the tentioner ever been replaced. When you take the belt off make sure everything moves freely.
 
Jack, Thanks for that, I will check the levels although I've just had it serviced so they should be OK. Had a pulley replaced a couple of years ago but the sound from the knackered pulley was a squel and it didnt go away. I'll get the tensioner looked at.

Which engine.......300tdi by any chance?
 
Try spooning some flour or chalk dust onto the inside of the belt while the engine is running. ( Slight safety hazard ) Don't get the spoon tangled up with the belt though, otherwise you may not have two fingers left to stick up !!
