Does anyone know the torque and recommended fitting of the bell housing to flywheel housing. From the instructions in the workshop manual it could be anything from finger tight and upwards.

I is aluminium so I was planning fitting with flat washers, blue Loctite and done up spanner tight (hand held half way down the shaft). Am I far off?

No torque values for the bell housing to flywheel housing bolts. Just tighten them. Good idea to fit spring washers as well as flat washers, no need for loctite but it's your time and money...
Nut, nuts, I mean nuts.

Correct size spanner will be of the length required to tighten. The studs are coarse thread into the alloy and fine thread for the nuts. give them a good nip with the spanner at full length , I have never managed to pull a stud out of the alloy , you do not want them working loose.

they expected you to have an idea on what was tight when tightening bolts in those days, i think they thought if you didnt understand that you shouldnt be working on a vehicle, they are a fine thread nut and the stud in the ali is coarse so not extremely tight and normal spanner is enough

I heard something a while back on this very subject, never heard it before but it's true: "mechanics tend to under-tighten and amateurs tend to over-tighten". I've seen it in practice... amateurs swinging on a fastener until their eyes bulge out.

Thank you guys. That is great. I like the flat washer, spring washer and then nut suggestion.
I take the point about knowing what i'm doing but, as an amateur, i'm definitely in the under-tightening group. I'm terrified about stripping a thread and having to replace a threaded stud in a hard to reach place.
Thanks again!

if you think about it those bolts and body work bolts etc just need to be reasonably tight ie using a normal spanner, tow bar bolts or spring shackle bolts etc need to be quite tight ie a bar and socket
