hello.:(

just got my first range rover, always wanted one so went for it. 1995 4.0se, had it for 3 days now and done 10 mile in it and then the problems started!!!!!!! the head gaskets has gone, so the AA man said and the starter motor.
been getting some mind blowing estimates from garages to sort the problem, has any body had a problem like this and would love to know how much it costed you.
love the car to bits but, been getting estimate of £3000 and above.
and would any body be willing to photo copy me the owners hand book and sell it to me.

would love your help:eek:

OK - if you can't afford to have the head gasket done / new block (given the price, I guess that is what is needed?) there are several products - I can't recall any specific names at the moment, but a search on Google for "engine block sealer" or similar should bring up some results. Check this link for info on P38 overheating problems.

Starter motor shouldn't be cripling to replace, get a LR mag and read through them, there are plenty of ads with P38 parts.

and would any body be willing to photo copy me the owners hand book and sell it to me.

Buy a Land Rover RAVE disc from eBay - make sure it covers the P38 - there is a handbook on that.

hi buster sorry to read about your misfortune mate , starter motors no big problem though any half decent auto electrical co will sort you one , try a local lucas agent :) .
your overheating sounds a bit grim though  then again who knows till the heads come off , have you any history with the car , have you tried speaking to last owner ? if its just head gasket failure the cost wont be any where near 3 grand , and you dont have to be a rocket scientist to do the job yourself either , as for block sealer , up to you mate if you just want to cobble it and get shut try it , my own personal veiw  is i would`nt as it will at best be a temp fix and at worst make the job even worse as i say though your choice (i`ve never known anyone to have had good results from it ) good luck though :)

I used it on a Disco V8 with a knackered head gasket and ran it for a long time after I had sucessfully fixed it that way! I have heard of plenty of people having similar success. You do have to follow the instructions *very* accurately though, and there is always a smal risk. It all depends on how buggered up the block/gasket is!

well there you have it

Is the 4.0 a push rod or OHC, forgive my ignorance!! if its a push rod then its a fairly easy job, no cams to dial in, more plug and play. all you would need to find then is a decent machinist to skim the heads and do the labour yourself. just an idea and better than getting stung for 3k!! if its a ohc then its still doable by a diyer just takes longer and a bit more technical gear to set up. cam timing wheel etc.

cheers mate for the info, will have a look for this block seal. its not that i cant afford the job, it just the fact that i have rung 5 land rover specialist and the estimates are so mismatched you dont know which to go for, would love to have a go at it my self but run my own electrical contractor busness, plus the girl friend does'nt trust me ha ha.
how difficult is it to just fit a recon engine.

thanks

Only one course of action springs to my mind:
Fix the starter motor, seal the heads, flog it and run a mile thanking your lucky stars...

Naughty naughty Jonathan :)

P.S. we're moving at the end of August :D

Harumph, just suggesting the chap cuts his losses:eek:

Excellent news - not much time to get the disco auto then?

We must have an afternoon out on the plane before you go? Mid weeks are good for me now I'm my own boss.

I know - think I'm going to have to leave that until we move. Having said that... I've just seen a 300 ES Auto on eBay France for 1500€ - 'tho it has a problem - just trying to get a meaningful answer from the seller as to what the problem is, At that price it is a bargain, even if I have to put a new/recon engine in it.

Yes - definitely have to go out before I go. Mail me with a date!

hello its that guy who got a duff motor again!!!!!!!!!!!:(
can any one help me with this one....
when i got the range rover it was in high gear mode, then i had a play and it went in to low gear. there is a button on the dash that flashes now and the gear box will not transfer out of low gear. i am not a dum person (most of the time) but have no owner manual and have no idea.
thought i'd let every body know, the car was picked up to day on a recover truck and on its way to the land rover garage, my bank account is crapping its self ha ha.

thanks
