Hi all

I took the Landy on a trip from Essex to Wales a couple of weeks ago..... on the way home, the old girl developed a bit of a screech from what I thought was a wheel bearing.

Got it up in the air yesterday to find both sides seemed fine. I changed the drivers side anyway as I already had the bearing set and it did have a bit of movement (even though a touch of adjustment would have probably done).

Got it back together and test drove to find the same issue. Its not all the time, but its getting more constant. Sounds like a race that's slipping rather than flowing if you know what I mean? But its got to the stage where people are looking as you drive down the road!

Anyone got any ideas where I should be looking if its not the wheels? This is my first Landrover so not particularly knowledgable on the set up.

On a side note... when I took the brake drum off I found a spring had popped off and the brake adjuster peg had fallen off of the pad! Put back together and adjusted the wheel up but on the test drive found that the pedal goes to floor on the first pump before bitting with the second. There was no break in the hydraulic system so am not expecting there to be air in there. It worked fine before I put the bits back where they should be, Help! lol

Cheers

Hi

I adjusted that one wheel once I got the peg back on. clockwise until it starts to bind than backed off a gnats. I didn't check any of the others so perhaps they have all been adjusted to compensate for the dodgy one in the past.

check you havent pulled the brake spring across both shoes rather from the 1 onto th steady post on the backplate when you refitted it also have you checked that the screech isnt just your fan belt slipping

I thought a wheel bearing is more of a rumble than a screech?

Was it the brakes squealing abit? I know mine does when the dust builds up or theres other crap in there

Hmmm I did pull the top spring (the one that was off just below the wheel cylinder) across the two shoes... Is the Landy set up different from everything else as that's what I have done on just about every set of brake shoes I have ever done

As for the fan belt/water pump possibility, my noise description probably isn't the best but its definitely not either of those. Once its started its intensity decreases with the road speed which is definitely making me think its the UJ's as suggested. Off to the shed tonight to dig out my grease gun! Can't remember the last time I used one of those but have a feeling that its going to get a bit of use now I have the bus!

I will keep you posted on the outcome!

Cheers all

Adie:)

It is mistakes like this that give landies a poor brake reputation. The next owner puts it back together as he found it, and so it goes on............

Ok, just to update............

Got the landy up in the air the weekend. Both wheels off and sorted the brake issue first, spring fitted to where it should be and hey presto it now stops!

Spun the wheels and checked for play on both sides and as before all seemed ok. Now mine is fitted with AVM freewheeling hubs, when I removed the offside one, all is as would expect with a bit of grease and that's about it. When I took off the nearside one there was a bit of oil sloshing around in there, took the hub off and on removing the bearing found its had virtually all the grease washed out of it!

Checked the brearing and it looks like the inner race has been skidding around on the outer shell rather than rolling. Did not have another bearing handy so re-packed with grease and re-assembled just to try it out and hey presto.... the noise is gone. So new bearing to be ordered and problem solved. The oil in the bearing area must have been sufficient to make it sound fine when not under load. Is there an oil seal in there somewhere that has allowed the diff oil to get through that I should be looking at changing?

With regard to the free wheel hub, the one with oil in has a few of the springs rotted away, is it possible to get these anywhere? I had a look on flea bay but can only find gasket type sets but no springs.

Cheers

can't remember on s3, but early defenders (90/110) use the diff oil to lube the bearings. also with later ones with oil seals, people remove the oil seal to get that behaviour back as they seem to last longer.

You may need to pull the swivels off, on later models there is an oil seal in the end of the axle tube.
As the price of seals and gaskets is low I always by double what I need and keep on the shelf so that I am rarely stuck for stuff when I need to strip down. It is a good idea to replace every seal whilst it is in bits, I have not had to look at mine for 5 years since done on my daily driver.
