Sound like the tappets are tight and you need to readjust.
Was the head skimmed?
Have you put it back to where it was previously?

If you can get it slack on number 3 then the others should be able to do the same so tight tappets. Maybe holding a valve or 2 open which may explain why it splutters and try’s but won’t quite get there.

Head has been skimmed and I have adjusted the valves but I will check them again, with the cam shaft timing set in the photos the timing appears to line up . Could it be a different shaft off a diesel or different engine

The petrol and diesel cam is same, wouldn’t think it would be from different engine , same as 90 and 200tdi too
So with valves gapped using rule of 9 can you get both rockers on No1 rocking at tdc

Rechecked the valve gaps and all OK so I've put it all back together but I neglected to charge the battery and paid the price!! Yes it's dead, 2 months ago it was turning engine over for a heck of a long time but the glass sight is indicating its time for a new one.
My charger is one that a light comes on when fully charged and it is coming on after a few mins so seems to confirm it dead so tomorrow or weds I will pick one up.
Also realised I've not reconnected the fuel line so still not really all back to gether oh and the little matter of putting the floor back and I bought a seat belt bar to fit so the fun goes on and on

A couple of hrs messing around today and he's running so hopefully tomorrow will get floor and seats back in finish the last bit of fuel pipe and then a test drive

Got floor, seats, seat belts and new fuel line all installed this afternoon but l can not get the engine to run smoothly and if I try to rev it it back fires through the carb.
Tried the timing at tdc and worked from there trying different settings but no joy it will run but seems to be missing so put new plugs and leads on checking for a spark at each plug and all good.
It's fresh fuel and I've checked the diaphragms in the carb and messed about with the mixture but no luck . The inside of the carb looks sooty is this due to back firing

TBH that needs to come off for a good clean.
Is it the reason? I don’t know, but messing about with screws in little holes, looking at that probably isn’t going to make much difference.
Back firing could be timing, could be crappy carb settings:)

Took carb off and gave it a good clean with carb cleaner, all jets are clear and float was slightly out so reset it put back on landy and a slightly better tick over but still slightly uneven and pops and back fires when reved up but I did notice a metallic rattle from the front of engine leading me to think the timing chain needs looking at again.
On the plus side it ticked over with no signs of smoke out of exhaust and no fluid leaking

Have you changed the condensor ? if it still has one or have you gone electronic

Took the belt of and noise still there not sure if valves need adjustment again , if I had got one spline on the dizzy drive out or a tooth out of line on the cam could it still run on idle ?
Video shows how far the timing marks are out .
On a plus side the interior is looking better now it's back together ❤

Walking home from work this evening for some reason I was questioning myself if I had the ht leads on right even though I'd checked them so headtorch on and I realised I was putting them on clockwise, school boy error.
Swopped them around turned the key and burst into life so let it warm up a little then a 5 minute first drive to petrol station put some fuel in checked for leaks and all was looking good so did a 6 mile round trip with no issues apart from an odd back fire when engine revs were low , got home did another check and still no issues .
Thanks to everyone for your input and advice
