Hello guys it has been a while since posting on here, my 2005 defender has a noisy belt which is a bit concerning as I had it replaced last year, if I spray a little wd40 onto it whilst running it does stop the noise for a short while, I’m thinking that maybe one of the bearings is on its way out or the tensioner? I have just purchased the fan removal spanner’s because my lovely mechanic is always so busy ( and rightly so ) thought it would be a good idea to investigate myself and having the fan spanner’s is a good thing anyway right? Once the fan is removed is it quite a simple task to whip the belt off and check the bearings, crank pulley etc?

Thank you all

Hello Tom the number on the belt packet is PQS101490
It is not uncommon for them to be 1mm out which will cause your issue. Pop the belt off and give all the pulleys a wobble/spin.

But do check that the belt actually says exactly 7PK1715. What brand was the belt? Dayco are not bad, Gates are best.

Take the fan off, take the belt off, check all bearings, pulley and belt tensioner and go from there.
If nothing is wrong then fit a new belt of a decent make.
Beat me to it ^

Thank you both very much the belt was a genuine one in Land Rover packet but now here is the but it was sat in my garage for about 3 years prior to this so maybe it deteriorated from not being used for them 3 years? How would I know if the belt tensioner is bad sorry if this is a silly question obviously it should spin nicely and not gritty but how would I know if it’s tensioning the belt correctly?

I'm not sure I have read about the tension being incorrect before.
My tensioner was a bit weird in the fact it would only have play in it when the pulley wheel was in a certain position. It basically felt fine unless you turned the pulley a little bit then there was obvious play.
I have read about aftermarket ones failing out of the box so fitted a genuine one.

Thanks guys once the belt is off and the fan is it fairly obvious if the crank pulley is knackered?

You will (hopefully not) see the rubber perished and if you get a pry bar and wobble the crank pulley around it shouldn't move excessively.
Thanks matey the spanner’s turned up today so going to take the fan off on Friday and give it everything a good inspection how would I know if the belt tensioner is bad?

You can sometimes just hear they're not right or them violently bouncing around when it's running (they always move around a bit when running). But check the pulley etc, and all the other pulleys.

Guys thank you very much I just changed the belt for the gates 7pk1715 and it’s running beautiful again lucky a local agri supplier had that exact belt in stock

The genuine belt I took off did look a bit thicker than the gates it said contitech 7pk1716 is that wrong then?

The top right hand bearing is a very slightly noisy so that’ll get changed soon

The one on the right on the bracket is ERR6658. The left one is ERR6493. Both are the same pulley but the ERR6493 uses a spacer and longer bolt (and is twice the price).

A well known reputable parts company has both in stock and also the bearings for them if you wanted to just change the bearings, which is normally fine. Also Gates belts 🤣 as they are top quality and better than Dayco.

Thanks Tom do I need to replace the bracket as well it is temping to try and get the bearings out and change them, I will be in touch for an order 😉. Also a couple of years ago I got a from cam cover from you with the upgraded seal, however I have lost the upgraded seal so just fitting the all makes cam cover with the seal already in it, I put some oil around the seal and it went it very easy, was I wrong to put oil on the seal before installing?

No the bracket should be fine (ERR6949 if you do).

No issues with oil/grease on the front cam cover oil seal. With the upgraded ones these often need a little a grease and sometimes soaking in hot water to get them in! They are slightly thicker.

If you replace the whole pulleys then you get whatever cheap chinese bearings Allmakes or Britpart decided to use. If you replace the bearings then you get good quality bearings, often the pulleys themselves are fine. They can be pushed in and out with a decent vice normally.

Thanks I’ll message you later for the order is it wise to buy the bolts as well when getting the bearings if you have them as well?
