my battery keeps going flat when not used for 4 to 5 days. had it tested at the local auto shop and he said it was ok? Obviously it isn't so want to test it off the car before buying a new one. Will leaving the car without a battery connected cause me problems, ie with things needing resetting etc? cheers in advance. oh its a 99 2.5dse auto.

wow that was quick. Sorry but newbie to alot of this. BECM aerial would be??

The signal from the remote control button on the key is picked up through an aerial built into the rear right window then is passed to the locking / alarm system. The age of the system means that this will pick up all sorts of modern signals so the car doesn't get the chance to 'sleep' so it flattens the battery. Disconnecting this aerial usually stops it picking up the signals.

The problem is that the radio receiver for the remote key (RF receiver) is sensitive to the same frequencies as wifi/wireless doorbells etc, and so keeps the car computer (BeCM) awake, thus draining the battery. The solution I'm afraid is to spend a completely unreasonable £150 or so on an updated version which only responds to the key signals. However you can provide a temporary solution by disconnecting the aerial for the RF receiver so it doesn't pick up many signals. This does make unlocking the door with the remote a bit tedious but it's still possible, and at least the car still starts once you're in!
To disconnect, you need to remove the rear, right parcel shelf in the boot, and find the little black box. There's a single blue wire connected to it - the aerial. There is also a wire cluster - DO NOT disconnect that because that will freak out the BeCM, and nobody wants that :p
