I've not had my Landy on the road long. But I'm finding the battery keeps going flat after only 2 starts.
My battery has been tested ok, I've disconnected the earth over night and when not in use (just in case it's being drained), but I can get it to start only twice then the battery doesn't seem to have any grunt.
Having the battery recharged, the Landy starts no problem.
However the battery is rated at 70AH. is this my problem? Is the starting draining the battery. Especially with this cold weather.
When the landy is running I'm getting 14v from the alternator.
Any Idea's anyone.

Iv'e sine tried a good known battery from a Transit rated at 72AH but this does the same.

Please Help!

Sounds like its pulling a lot of amps on start up. Could be starter.

Most of us as matter if course replace the battery with a 100cca battery.
Although it might be 70ah it's the cca rating that's important. Under 600 is crap.

I've only really been on short journeys at the mo, but on some occasions I've had it running for about an hour. bearing in mind ive also had the lights and heater going. Also this one has an electric fan fitted which always seems to run for about five minutes after use.
Not looked at the cca rating, never heard of that before, but then I've never had much to do with batteries.

hmm, with everything running and only short journey's you're unlikely to be getting enough charge back into the battery from the little alternator.

I would have thought an hour long journey should do it though.

I can't see much advantage to the fan over running - if you haven't got the engine running so the water being pumped around, then cooling down the radiator isn't going to do much - nor do series really get that hot.

You could use a multi meter to measure the current draw when the starter is clocking over, just to check it's not pulling more than it should be.

I'd kill the fan to start with. Wire it through the ignition or through a manual switch, if your temp guage works. Should hardly need it this weather anyway and certainly over-run is pointless.

The fan is really unusual, there's a thermostat adjuster dial in the front of the engine bay. I can turn the temp setting so as the fan doesn't come on, but as there's no temp gauge I'm not sure if turning it off is a good idea.

Getting the temp gauge working is on my list.

The alternator is rated at 70amps. I was thinking of buying a 95AH battery, would this alternator charge the battery? but then would this solve my problem?

Yes it would charge that battery but obviously it would take longer to fully charge it but a few miles would do it and better for starting. Sounds like your fan thermostat is set far too low. About 85degrees I would say.

look like?: kenlowe

just looked at your current car.. Land Rover series 2 crossed with a range rover classic and has a black cab Perkins engine.. so probably not :)

I've since found out that the engine is a 10J. This was a land rover engine but was used in the Austin FX4 black cab as well.

It looks like a Land Rover engine but slightly different configuration, as with the electric fan. But it also has the air filter sitting on top of the manifold inlet. Apart from that it looks the same as a friend of mines. The radiator looks small, but I'm going to replace this with a standard one eventually.

Thanks to all the people on LandyZone, I'm learning allot about Land Rovers on here. It's a god send. I wish I'd discovered Land Rovers years ago!:D
