In my 1990 RRC Vogue I have a brand new Varta battery fitted and it starts nice and quickly under normal day to day driving conditions, but if I leave the RR for more than a few days parked up it is sluggish to start.

It never fails to start, but acts like the battery is old, which it is not.

The alternator was replaced 3 years ago, and even if it hadn't been, that wouldn't be the problem because it is fine when it has been recently driven.

Maybe that is just normal for those big 3.9 V8s....

Sounds more like you've got a power drain somewhere. I know the 'classic' became more complicated electrically with the intro of the 3.9 in late '89 but the '93 I had a few years ago didn't suffer from your problem & I NEVER pay silly money for a battery. My own '87 3.5efi does less than 2K per year & sits for up to two weeks between outings, yet always fires up first time & that's on an basic auto-store battery.

or..dodgy leads..check batt leads and all earth leads..

put multimeter across each lead.9set on volts).should have no more than 0.1v drop on each..put multimeter set on amps in series with earth lead to check for batt drain..should be no more than 50ma..(or so)

Well after posting that I took the battery out, put it on charge until it was 100%, and left it.

Today I connected it up and low and behold it was sluggish again.

Must be a bad battery.

I'll get another one soon. I hate it when that happens. Can't they make things right these days!??

Try Battery Megastore on line, the Alphaline MF31-1000 for the P38 is great, I'm sure they will have one that fits the Classic:)
