Tried to start my Landy for first time in a month....just a clicking sound. Used an old jump starter portable pack and starter turned over slowly and then quickly died. Attached a charger to the battery and big sparks for a sec....then switched on and it showed 'charging' for 5 secs then switched to 'maintenance/conditioning'. Leaving it on charge for an hour still only gave slow turning of the starter for a while before it was flat. Any tricks to check the battery or bring it back to life before I get a new one?

thers ya problem - its a modern charger that monitors battery state - the battery is too flat for it to charge. see if yu can borrow a non-intelligent??? charger to give the battery an initial charge.

Unfortunately it is a known problem with maintenance chargers - they dont like flat batteries :(.

or get a new battery.

Yep Second that,

Or if you are really in the Sh1t, jump it and run it at 2000 rpm - long drive, (or brick on cellerator!!!!!) - make sure you got at least 13.2 volts on battery terminals (make sure altenator is doing its job. Do it for a 30 mins or so, that should give you enough for a modern charger. I got a flasho deluxe charger, and have to switch for a dumb one when its really flat.

quick way for check it battery is knackered is how long it retains a charge, if you do above she should be good for at least 2 days.... when fully charged.

Oh do you have water in it? Worth checking....

or is it a sealed unit....

You won't get much charge in a battery in an hour, anyway. See if an overnight charge works any better.

Thanks for the ideas.
I found the receipt for the battery (UNIPART) and would you believe the 3 year warranty ran out a month ago !! The receipt was for £70 quid...went on the UNIPART website and the exact same part is now....£112 quid  Went to Halfords and the spotty kid couldn't even find a 1976 88' 2.25L 'Land Rover' on the computer (they only have Range Rover, Discovery and Freelander). Even Euro Car Parts say they can't find a match on their database.

I have fully charged the portable power pack. If I get her started I will go for a long drive and then try the charger...but can't do while it is pitch black when I get back from work...the headlights will eat up all the juice!

You dont need a specific battery. just get one with the same or higher cranking amps than the one you currently have. I recommend a proper motor factors not halfrauds or anything crap like that to purchase a new battery

Well....after failing to get her to even start on a portable pack I went to buy a new battery...Euro Car Parts couldn't find one for me, UNIPART wanted £112 quid for another lead-acid unit with a 3 year warranty...so I went to Halfrauds and spoke to a guy who knows about cars and is over 40 ! (instead of the usual spotty 14 year old) I bought one of their Calcium batteries which has a 4 year warranty - £99. Their online catalogue doesn't even list a 76' S3 SWB...but the guy knew what would work...got a HCB072...fits perfectly...and she burst into life first time...checked the output on high revs and it is showing about 14v so the alternator should be OK. If any of you have ever wondered what to do with a bust battery...a really old guy who laid a tarmac drive for me a few years ago poured the acid from one onto the ground before laying the hardcore....the best weedkiller ever..stops anything from growing up through fresh tarmac or concrete. Not very 'environmentally friendly'...but if I gave a toss about that I wouldn't own an old landy !!
