Thanks to all for the advice, I think I no which battery to go for now
Make sure your alternator is not the 13.8V one if you're going for one of those big calcium jobbies or it will sulphonate.

Dan, your wife should like the GARDNER 8L3B engine in "JONDOR" then...weighs 3.1Tonnes, 24 litre, straight eight. My Wife says "Bigger is Better" so that's the end of the debate.
Sulphonate? A new word is bornMake sure your alternator is not the 13.8V one if you're going for one of those big calcium jobbies or it will sulphonate.
Lovely engines how many Nm per Gallon and what Knots?Dan, your wife should like the GARDNER 8L3B engine in "JONDOR" then...weighs 3.1Tonnes, 24 litre, straight eight.
Currently looking for a gearbox to bolt onto it
Unsure on all counts I'm afraid. It is, however, the 240HP variant. I bought it last year but, although it's now lying on the engine bed, it's in need of crankshaft regrind and goodness knows what else. It's identical to the engine removed from JONDOR at the end of her working life. It needs a 3U/C, 3:1 reduction gearbox when I can find one.Lovely engines how many Nm per Gallon and what Knots?

I also have a fully refurbished GARDNER 6LXC that was going to push her along, but I really wanted an 8L3B.
Do you have any GARDNER experience Dan?
That sounds brilliant. What you need is one of these Mike
The 78-hp 3516E V16 industrial engine is the latest and largest of Caterpillar's dual-certified EU Stage V / U.S. EPA and CARB Tier 4 Final engines. Produces 2,100 hp at 1,650 rpm and 8275 lbs.-ft. torque at 1,200 rpm and is capable of being operated at maximum power and speed without interruption or load cycling.
Should be able to get Jondor on the plane with that
As a young man in Africa I was astonished to be shown a huge Caterpillar earth mover with a V16 turbo diesel, never knew at that time there were such big engines in that type of machine. That sounds brilliant Keith.
It'd cerainly throw JONDOR's 48" prop, Keith!
But will it get rid of a rhododendron? As a young man in Africa I was astonished to be shown a huge Caterpillar earth mover with a V16 turbo diesel, never knew at that time there were such big engines in that type of machine.
What diameter pistons? On the wagons they were 4 inch or 4 1/2 depending on whether it was a 120 or 150 .Dan, your wife should like the GARDNER 8L3B engine in "JONDOR" then...weighs 3.1Tonnes, 24 litre, straight eight.

I've got one at home. I'll ping the dimensions to you shortly. What diameter pistons? On the wagons they were 4 inch or 4 1/2 depending on whether it was a 120 or 150 .
5and3/8" Alan...What diameter pistons? On the wagons they were 4 inch or 4 1/2 depending on whether it was a 120 or 150 .
With a 3:1 reduction box, at little more than 6-700 RPM, I'm told it would push 250tons of black oil, tow a couple of of fully laden dumb barges and trundle up the Humber Estuary, then solo up the Ouse to York Glassworks at a fair old clip. The torque the 8L3B produced was legendary, whilst still being highly economical...27lts an hour has been mentioned. When I last fired up my 6LXC, I stood a coin on edge and it didn't move an iota running at 1500 RPM.230hp from 24litres!
We've managed 600hp from a big cam 400 cummins, That would be a good unit for the old barge..
Sorry I've been busy, loved the way Gardner stayed with Imperial measurements 5and3/8ths big bugger. A firm I worked for had ERF's with Gardener engines.if you did a million recorded miles they would exchange the engine for a new one. A new driver ran the bottom end of one engine 5000miles short of the million, never thought to check the oil. It was the night trunk motor doing London three times a week.9.5" tall... Just awaiting suitably ribald comments from the usual suspects... I give it about 30secs...Hahaha
SulfonateSulphonate? A new word is born
Sulphate in British English, or Sulfate for the semi-literates in other countries.Sulfonate
