Bankz's Defender TD5 90

Went back and stripped the other side down completely just to be sure nothing is going wrong there. Bar the horrible state of the grease and a slightly sticky bearing, which I changed as I had one spare, but everything is fine! De-greased everything, re-greased and reinstalled with a new Stub/Hub seal as the other one looked terrible.

Nice shiny bearings :)

Parts should arrive Thursday/Friday with any luck. Though it looks like the new hub assembly wont arrive till Monday :( Shall have to wait and see!
 
Was really please this morning to find everything had arrived, some things 3 days early so unpackaged and got to work only to find this.

Fu.cking britpart total sh!t.



Brand new hub with a gouge out of it. Looks to be a horrendous casting defect. How on earth does something this pad slip through QC?
Needless to say it's going back, the shop was very understanding and refunded me, picking up the Sh.itpart on Monday...

So decided to get on with building the stub axle, pretty simple to do after reading some hints online. Did come in a dreaded blue bag but looks perfectly alright to use but I used a high quality Japanese roller bearing not the sh.itpart one. So cut the shi.tpart bearing in half to use to seat the new bearing. Tight fit but drifted in easy enough, both Haynes and workshop book where useless here and just said 'go to the dealer' or didnt have proper instructions on how to assemble the stub.



Soaked the roller bearing in EP90 before fitting as well just for good measure.



New, well old half shaft and CV fitted, has some light surface rust from storage in the shed but took care of that.



Stub axle is on! Filled up the hub with one shot grease and ready for the hub when it arrives next week.



Also finally bought a torque wrench so I can do the hub nuts up correctly, weary of doing them up too tight and ruining the bearings. Going to check the other 3 over the weekend as well just in case I've done them up too tight. Also going to replace the rocker cover gasket as there a slight oil leak, good deal too! Genuine one for £22 delivered rather pleased by that!

Decided to change the wheel bearings on the front L/H side for good measure today, easy enough to do after watching some great videos from Land Rover Toolbox Videos on Youtube. Set it up using the 'idiot proof' TD5 method as didn't have the materials to set it up using the old adjustable method. Though the R/H side will be set up using the old method. New torque wrench came in handy!

Checked the rear R/H wheel bearing as well, bearings where still in good nick and undamaged, torqued up correctly. Shall check the L/H side tomorrow
 
Everything is back together! It's running and happy. No noises, no grinding, all smooth. Going to drive around a bit then jack it up and check for any play in the bearings.

However soon as one things fixed something else goes bloody wrong. Drivers side central locking has stopped working! Almost no information about it online so have contacted Hawk directly, still within warranty but its £20 for the whole lot so hardly breaking the bank. Just bloody annoying.

No clicks or anything? Did you not get 4 actuators in the kit? If so just use one of those instead.

Did you manage to get the hawk kit to flash the indicators? I haven't managed that
 
Fixed it over the weekend, it was down to me wiring like a pe.nis. The cables got caught in the door and severed them, moved the wiring around and reconnected everything and all is good! Got the 4 actuator kit but the master is different so can't really use the slave actuators as the master.

I havnt yet but I have everything needed to do it including access to an electrical engineer (mate of mine) whos going to solder the relay onto the 10AS. Onces its wired in, from what I can tell the standard LR fob will then set the alarm, immobiliser, CDL and flash the hazards. Just finding the time (and will) to get the 10AS out and have him wire it up, then hope it works!

New races going into the shiny new hub. Cutting a slit in an old race makes for a perfect tool to get the new one fitted

Found using a large 50ml syringe was much better for getting the grease exactly where you want it -


Everything is well and truely back together and properly adjusted now. Everything is smooth and no horrible noises to speak off.

Given it a good clean as well, missed a few spots but hey good enough for me. Think I'll start touching up the paintwork in a few spots...
 
Off to France again on the 3rd June for some off road fun! Shall try and take more pics this time! Heres hoping nothing breaks....

Did the 85k service over the weekend, checked all the wheel bearings again for any play everything is nice and solid still. Just got to grease my UJs, Props & Balljoints as my grease gun packed in over the weekend :confused:

New ones arrived however! By Draper, £11 of Amazon and much better quality, covered in some kind of rough paint so still easy to grip even when covered in grease.
 
Just got back from another weekend in Marquenterre, France. I love it there, so much fun and the perfect level of difficulty for me, not too extreme but not easy either. Conquered a steep rutted hill that I couldnt last year, near enough sailed up this time.

Got to say the Terrafirma Medium load set up has been fantastic. I pushed it pretty hard at points and they just worked. It was considerably more comfortable than last year. Only issue I had was both my rear springs popped out on a tough hill (didnt use big enough cable ties!) At the same time lost the plastic dust cover off a rear shock, going to replace it shortly. Other than that no issues at all :D

MOT Passed :D no advisories! No DPF fitted either and running 'greener' than when I bought it according to the smoke test. First year was 2.5/3.0 this time it was 0.81/3.0. Must be doing something right...

Only thing is they mentioned the panhard rod bushes are very worn, which I missed. New bushes & bolts on the way!

Panhard rod bushes changed. Relatively easily... Used Britpart bushes as they can be pushed in without a press. Handles SO well now, its shocking.

Sadly however went laning yesterday through some VERY tight lanes! Did some damage :(

Not only did a branch dent my roof it popped the alpline glass out into the woods somewhere! Got to get this repaired asap...

Also managed to tear off my snow cowl, should be able to glue this back together for the time being.

Alll in all bad day.
 
@BronkoMini Nope, had no idea until we stopped at a gate! Got some new glass on they way, £30 delivered not to bad. Now to find a body shop that will actually do the work!

@Bennehboy Thanks :D Yep! Thought it would be a nice easy day out on my day off. Nope total opposite! Pretty decent day though. Definitely wouldnt get your Disco down there!!
