Just pulled up outside my house in my 90 300tdi and BANG!

Battery light came on and thought it might be aux belt, Lifted bonnet to discover the whole belt tensioner and housing had fell off!

Upon further examination noticed that the bolt that hold tensioner to engine had sheered.

PROBLEM. How do i get the sheered bolt out of the engine?

the tensioner stud is screwed into water pump/alternator bracket and can be removed to drill stud out which is already helicoiled into bracket

will have a look at that later, if so that will save me having to remove all front end to get to it!!!

I bought some stud axtractors a while ago from the Mac tool man one set with left hand drill bits and have used a couple of times and best bit is assuming stud not seized when the drill breaks through the back of the broken stud it then winds it out no need to use the extractor bit, this was on nearly new trucks though.
I would do what James said and remove the housing to work on it.

i have a set like this made by dormer , trouble is if the stud/bolt is bottomed out in the hole you dont stand much chance getting em out
if when drilling through you feel the drill break through into the hole you stand more stand more chance getting it out
broken studs/bolts can be a bastard of a job somtimes . good luck :)
