On way back from a job today my '94 300tdi deepender start violently vibrating to the point where i couldn't drive over 30mph. Trying to accelerate it felt as though something was binding and low revs were the only way to drive. Pulled over to have a look and couldn't see anything, none of the axle ends or diffs were hot but the transfer box was. Drove home very slowly but the vibrating didn't improve. Got home and dropped the oil on transfer box and it was a horrible dark brown colour and smelt almost peaty, also the magnet had a decent amount of filings on it.
I have got wading gear and used it last time i went offroad but the oil seals have been dripping a bit and im wondering if its got contaminated. Going down a hill into our village i dipped the clutch and the vibrating stopped? The engine is still sweet as a nut, so i think i can rule that out. Anyone any suggestions before i start dismantling and replacing things??
cheers

UJ's all fine both new props and handbrake is currently defunkt due to leaking oil seals so i can rule that out.

Retard here said uj's were fine, yes they were nice and tight but front prop at transfer box end, uj was totally knackered and mal-aligned so problem solved. Standard prop shelved with new uj in place for a rainy day and double carden jobby en-route!!!
cheers
