Back up and running.

Gave everything a good polish and blew out with the air line. The flattened drill bit pulled some crud out of a few of the holes, in particular the middle bolt hole nearest where the gasket blew between 3 & 4.

Running very nicely atm, I've got some desperately needed materials to pick up from town tomorrow and when I've finished work I'll retorque and adjust tappets to be sure.
I believe someone mentioned crud in your holes

@blue beasty .

So did you re-flat your block with a piece of glass and some wet and dry?

Cheers

I did, I cut 2 strips of 4mm mirror glass about 3x8" and glued them together. Blocked all the holes with blue paper and grease and taped 600 grit wet and dry to the glass and used wd40 as lube.

Used 6 sheets cut in half so 12 pieces in all and took about 2 hours to make a noticeable difference.

Wiped everything off and polished with a bit of brake cleaner on a cloth.

Drained engine oil and refilled with cheapo Wilko 20w50 which will be replaced with better quality mineral oil and a new filter tomorrow when I retorque the head.

Nice...

Good job...fingers crossed for you.

Cheers

you couldnt take 2 thou out with wet and dry, pointless trying,though surface should be clean, 2 thou isnt out of the way with a good quality composite gasket

I wasn't suggesting I did, or that it was 2 thou out. I know it was less that 2 thou because that's the thinnest feeler guage I have.

It's certainly a lot cleaner than I managed scraping the last time and there appeared to be a small ridge along a section of the block along the edge on the plug side. That at least has gone. I'm happy every little helps :)
