Hi everyone.
So I bought a freelander 1 kalahari a week ago. I've drove it twice covering approx 600 miles over 2 days and I went to go out in it today to find I can't drive it .
So the problem is when the engine is off I can seamlessly move between gears but when the engine is running I can't engage any gear. Any suggestions as to whether I could fix without breaking the bank or scrap.
Any feed back will be welcomed.
Thank you

A bit more information needed, Does the clutch pedal feel light? Have you checked fluid level in the clutch master cylinder under the bonnet? If you put it in first gear and turn ignition key does the car jerk forwards, obviously don’t let it start up when doing this,
The slave cylinder are prone to leak and also the plastic pipe going too it so check for fluid leaks,

Pedal takes barely any effort to push, can't test the theory of the car being in 1st gear my neighbour loves to put the back end of his car almost flush with the front of mine ‍♀️ and I'm unsure how to check the fluid levels.

It looks like fluid loss, pop the bonnet and as you look in on your left side at the back of the engine compartment you will see a circular top slightly bigger than a 50 pence piece, unscrew it and check for fluid, if I suspect it’s empty top it up with DOT3 or 4 brake fluid,

Hello and welcome:)

lift bonnet and check fluid level in brake master cylinder is ok

If you pump the clutch pedal it should get firmer but in all likelihood it will need some work/ or bits and a bleed to remove air from the system,

So following suggestions to check fluid. I've went to lift the bonnet and it won't open (at this point I want to cry lol) any ideas how I can get the bonnet open when lever won't release it please.

Update: got into the bonnet eventually. Fluid is full (to the max line) found a few other unrelated faults too whilst under there. Scrap yard is becoming more appealing by the second.
So as fluids are full what would be the next suggestions please.

Going to bite the bullet on thus one taking it into the garage for diagnosis as there's other faults.
2 doors don't work off central locking
Rear passenger window doesn't work
Bonnet cable needs looking at
The named/discussed issue
And for extra measure I have a tyre that goes down even with nothing stuck in to cause a puncture
I'm having all the luck lol
