my truck was parked in my garage for 6 months, I started the engine and was getting a terrible back fire, so I brought new spark plug leads and the engine was fine. I took the truck out today on a 2 mile run everything was fine got back home and as I got out the engine cutout, I then had trouble starting and when it did run I started to get the back fire again. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers Trumar

Nice one Col. I didn’t think about these 3. Just trying to educate me self, why would it might be any of these 3 when I haven’t been anywhere near these parts? Cheers Trumar

Back fire is the result of unburnt fuel reaching the exhaust system, most likely an ignition problem.Start with the easy stuff, points, plugs, leads, cap, condensor, coil before moving on to valves, timing, compression, carb settings.

The condenser in particular can fail completely or in degrees, it might seem Ok one day and then faulty the next and then back to OK again making fault finding difficult.

Apologies to Colthebrummie, Hicap phill and tottot for just getting back to you. I have had to wait nearly 2 weeks for a distributor cap, in the end they gave me 3 different ones. I put the right cap on yesterday got the truck running but it still cuts out, I got it running once for about 5 mins as soon as I touch the excellerator it cuts the engine out. Took out the spark plugs out and they where black soot cleaned them and it was still the same. Engine starts but keeps cutting out? Any help greatly appreciated.

I know this is a bit unlikely but check the air mixture screw on the carb. On a Zenith its on the base and needs to be screwed out about one and a half turns...screw it all the way in (not too tight) then out one and a half turns

My carb is a WEBBER TIPO 34 ICH will it be the same screw in 11/2 turns out?

Definatly an over fueling problem, cut's out due to to much fuel drowning the spark.Plugs of a correctly running engine will be a light brown in colour.Float is inside the carb body. Info on how to tune on the webb.

Floats stick after a vehicle has been left stading, endless problem on mowers. No idea how to get to it as I have a diesel but usually once you get it running the vibration frees them off.

Yeah I think mine is ok. I can’t even workout where the float is. But I think it’s not sticking, as the engine started to run sweet, I stood there and video the sound then after 30secs it went back to coughing and spluttering.

Not too sure, mines the Zenith. But the principle would be the same. One and a half turns isn't critical, it's just a starting point to get it running.

I done what you said one and a half turn. That helped loads. Definitely much better at starting also running longer, but still running ****tte! Appreciating the help big time.
