Some cars aint got no spare - or the room to fit one.
My Ford dont carry no spare - and anyroadup - wot do I carry - a front or a rear, assuming I did have the room?
That has never stopped any being recovered, to my knowledge.

I've been keeping the spare wheel on the rear door for years (7.50x 16). Somebody slammed it shut 15 years ago and the glass shattred, but I replaced the horizontal bar below the glass (which was completely rotten) and stiffened it up in a few other areas and it's been good ever since. It's survived for about 40 thousand miles with lots of bumping around on greenlanes.

So modifying the inside of the back door seems the way to go? Is it just a case of a thick aluminium plate being bolted in? Or is it a big case of ali welding and whatnot?

I just repaired the steel frame on mine with some steel sections I shaped myself, and a mig welder. The point I was making is that a rotten rear door will not do well with a spare wheel on it. So if the door is repairable and you have the time, tools and skills to do the job, then why not repair it with a bit more strength built in and save money by not buying either a new rear door nor a side swinging spare wheel carrier?

I have a swing away, which is about to come off. I dont want somethign so modern on it, when im trying to make it original 80s retro.

Ill ahve a look at the inside of my door, I ahve a feeling I need a new one anyway. Cheers
