Hello again everybody,
I've been away for quite a while as I sold my Gaylander (anybody remember it?) and moved back to the U.K. Anyroad upwards, I've got another now and have bought myself a problem, so if anyone can offer any advice I'd be grateful...... right, here goes....

Its a 2004 TD4 with 116,000 on the clock. What happens is - sometimes when I'm just going along at a sensible speed on the flat I look behind me and I can't see anything for white smoke. I look like a WW2 destroyer trying to hide at sea! Then the smoke disappears and all is well for a while, even if I accellerate hard uphill, all is clear behind me. Then, all of a sudden it happens again and there's the smoke again. There doesn't seem to be any pattern or logic to it. Someone suggested that this can happen when the oil level is too low, so I checked that and topped it up (it was, actually low at the time), but that didn't make any difference.
So.......if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

I've got my little bloke going to have a look at it for me tomorrow - problem is, I'm now disabled and my days of getting oily are unfortunately over. He reckons at this stage it's actually the turbo that's knackered so it looks like I'll have to own up for one from a scrapper. I've only had the car a couple of weeks and it's got progressively worse, so I reckon the ***** that sold it to me knew this was in the offing, but there y'go.
Anyroad upwards, I really appreciate your input and my little bloke is going to check the filter first before he dives in waving a spanner around to get the turbo off!
