[b] freelander vcu help [/b]

Mines just done 100K on original VCU. I check it every 6 months or so. I have always run the tyres as recommended (new to the back) and on the same type. Original Michelin then onto Pirelli Scorpion STR. If there was a good one I think I got it! Its only ever had oil, filters, tyres, two pairs of front pads and a set of discs in 100K. - It will probably fall to bits tomorrow!!!!!

Glad to hear it. I'm not gonna worry about it. Just shows they're fine like several LR dealerships have said they're "normally" fine as long as vehicle is looked after. Looks like yours is :) just can't wait to get it and take it on my field ;)
 
Gents,

I need some advice.... I'm in France currently with my Freelander 1 and have had to buy a new tyre as I punctured one off roading. So Tuesday I bought two new tyres 'Michelin Latitude tour hp' 215/65/R16 102H and had them put on the back and the old ones on the front... drove the car and wondered what the hell happend! The noises were terrible. I went back to the garage and banged my head against a brick wall because of the langauge barrier. I did some further research on line and discovered that I now need to makesure I have four of these not two as they are not compatible with other tyres (slight change in Diameter apparently...so I read) Equally, to drive with out four but only two will cause major problems with the VCU!!! [That makes me nervous]. Nervous because I've now got the garage to get the damn tyres but they won't have them till MONDAY!!!!! [Only in France] and equally I have to drive my FL another 130 miles between now and Monday! Question is will the VCU hold out!!!! Or will it be :censored:...I'm not sure if, in the short term it would be okay, and only get damaged in longterm.... if that makes sense? Is 130 miles classed as long term? :confused:

Anyway would welcome some constructive feedback.

I'd understood that it's fine to change just two tyres as long as the new ones go on the back, surely they are in the same ball park size wise as the pair you've taken off so I don't get why you're suddenly having problems unless there's something else wrong, confused.com :-/
 
Yes normally changing two is fine...i've done before on the same car but not used Michelin Latitudes! The car was running fine on Monday - with the spare on when I took it to the garage- but once I'd had the change done for the two new ones [ I also had the tracking checked at the time] it all sounded awful! At first I thought it was the fitting at the garage, and eventually had them re-check and re-balance... but the problem remained and made no sense whatsoever. Hence I did some research on the tyres and found if you use these tyres you MUST change all four tyres or you will have problems. The noise from the tyres reminds me of a previous life driving LR's in the Army.... its the same road noise!

Hi Mad Hat Man, See my previous post above....I've got the tyres coming but it's the VCU and the mileage I've got to cover between now and Monday in the current status Quo:confused:

I could try, but over the telephone it tends to be difficult, generally it's easier to point at the offending part while jabbering on in French.
My French is not that good with technical stuff, wife might be able to do it if I give her a picture of the drive line.
Easiest way would be an email to the garage with a picture and explanation:)

No, but Land Rovers are as rare as hens teeth and Indies that specialise in them do not exist, so getting info across about the bit you are talking about can be difficult without either being there or having a picture.:)

Been away and hope I'm not to late adding my input here. I agree with what's been said DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR unless you remove the props.

If you're getting noticable transmission noise - you'll cook your transmission in no time - and that'll be far worse than waiting a weekend for a couple of tyres.

It sounds like they're not the same make/type of tyre that was on there - it doesn't matter if they are 'basically the same' - they won't be and they'll f**k your transmission unless you change 4.

There's threads on here with people buying 4 of the same make/type of tyre and they get problems - because they came from different batches and were slightly different.

So DON'T DRIVE IT, just to repeat, DON'T DRIVE IT.

If you remove the prop, you're fine to drive it - but not with the props attached. In fact, after stressing it enough to make bad transmission noise, just to be on the safe side, I'd be inclined to leave it off until you're back home.
