hello

Plan on using the defender for camping this year. Have converted the rear into a bed and storage with leasure battery and heating. I want an awning that I can quickly erect and also leave when driving away that comes of the rear of the defender. Ideally something not too expensive max £200. Has anyone got any recommendations for this?

Thanks

Not able to recommend a specific awning but I think I know what you want as I used to have one many years ago for my S111.
It was a free-standing tent with large opening at the rear and arms which lifted up in clipped onto the gutter and sides which made a tunnel and sealed it to the vehicle, when not in use (and the arms folded down) the opening was zipped shut and the tent was sealed against the elements (I used it as a freestanding tent on many occasions). As it was designed to couple to a motorcaravan it was very tall with well over 6ft headroom.
Mine was cotton and started to suffer with wear & damp (it was also very heavy & bulky to carry) but I still sold it on for a very fair price to someone who loved the idea and was willing to make some repairs.

Just done a quick Google search for "Camper Freestanding Awning" and came up with loads of suggestions (many over your £200 budget though).

I was at the ARC National in Plymouth (think that would be around 1989) and forgot to un-clip the tent before driving away, luckily I only got a few feet before stopping but it resulted in a few bent poles and a very red face!

I’ve just sorted one this week, maybe not as posh as you wanted, but sorted mine for under £40
I have fixed 2 D buckles to the outer top rails of my series these match the strap spacing on a 3x3 tarp I had delivered this week , I have drilled the 2 rear fixings on the tub for additional restraint points
The front will be stretched out with 2 tent poles , I’m hoping to get it on grass this weekend and try it out

That’s my tent I took the two front poles from! however I’m camping for 2 in a swb with dog and not enough room for the big tent good idea though

I’m thinking of a 2x2 gazebo now with sides, looks like I can reverse it right up and under it in one side. It won’t be sealed between the car and tent but should be a matter of seconds to erect and fold up nice. Can’t sleep in it but will seal from rain and wind. Any opinions?

The Gazebo idea would be ideal but looking at dimensions, I would not be able to open my door into it as it’s 2m off ground and I think the height of the gazebo enternace is 1.8m! Shame really as would be ideal

I have been racking my brain for the tent that was designed for this very purpose and then this afternoon it came to me!

3x3 tarp1st rest in windy conditions the tarp would go to ground on windy side and still fix to roof
