Avoid these P38's for sale!

Just thought i would start a thread to hopefully help new buyers avoid the dodgy/unscrupulous sellers out there!

Please list any which you have viewed and have faults covered up etc

Went to look at this one a few months ago -

Used 2000 Land Rover Range Rover for sale in Milton Keynes | Pistonheads

Avoid this one!

1) The price first of all (went up from the already ridiculous £8k that he asked me for)
2) Engine was warm when i went to view (a trader knows that is bad practice!)
3) Radio missing
4) Many suspension and HEVAC issues, including leak in footwell
5) Milage incorrect
6) Paperwork "could not be found" for all the "work", including the LPG certificate
7) Tatty interior
8) Various other issues, no doubt if i dug any deeper i would find a lot more (thinking lpg!)
8) Waste of time!

12.5 k is a crazy price for a P38 (unless it's something like a Linley).
TBH, i looked at 8 P38's before finding one without any faults & everything working as it should. Even then, it was 4 months before things started to 'need attention'.

I would think a Linley would be much, much more than £12.5k.
The guys over at Graeme Hunt recently sold a Holland and Holland with 63,000 miles for circa £22,000 and they have an early 4.0 County with 54,000 miles up for £14,750.

That's nuts for a P38, the name on the back means feck all, it's still an old P38.:rolleyes:

Ah an image buyer. Names mean nothing to me, all I want is something that works, I prefer no names, indeed when I was buying new, I always had the model info deleted where possible, BMW offered this option.

Still crazy money. Holland & Holland are just a vogue spec with a bit of matt finish wood & some picnic tables to pander to the image concious. Who ever paid 22k for one needs their head examining. A County is a base model, worth around £4-5k tops with that sort of mileage. There must seriously be a concentration of idiots around their neck of the woods.
 
The "gent" was quite a comical salesman. Wished him all the best, while hoping and saying that no one is gullible/naive enough to buy it!

While the ltd. edition have some appeal, i prefer to keep it simple. Nice Vogue, bottomed out in deprecation now - will only get the money back or watch as the prices rise for a well kept example.

As we all know landys are hobbies, prohibitive maintenance the best practice!

On a side note, Paul at Legacy Motors (P38 Specialist) is very good. Very knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about P38's (and selling!)

Firstly. This is a bit ****ty. You are on a public forum claiming that the seller is dodgy and unscrupulous, with no real claim. That's in the libel arena and forums are shut down and face legal action for such.

Secondly. We live a supposed free market. he can advertise the car, what ever the f**k he likes.

It's a used car. Any one could thus claim any of us advertsing our cars are being unscrupulous and selling a tatty motor because it's not at a price *you* are prepared to pay or it's not in brand new showroom condition.

Thirdly, if the seller was selling a car that was a ringer, stolen, subject to outanding finance or was undeclared Cat C or D, then you may have a claim.

Anyone in perfectly entitled to sell something for what they are asking.. it's the market that dictates the value. We're not in communist state yet.


NB. - I have no connection to the seller, nor know of him, nor any connection to the vehicle in any way whatsoever.

Honest opinion is not considered libelous any longer law changed in about 2013. ;)
 
I too checked everything three times before I went for it. But I had proof of the parts and you could see the newness of them as well. Then as yours a couple of months then minor problems. Over the years more. I would buy a L322 and hope it was better. comes with an inhaler for the diesel engine hopefully. Land Rover Owner International Mag has a buyers guide in and these prices are for non concourse examples. I'd rather spend £4 on a mag and view the problems listed. These forums are full of problems with models, some down to not reading the handbook. i.e. suspension will not rise if certain things are in operation. Door open, Brakes on etc.

Set this up wanting to up help people out who are looking to buy. Hopefully it will help some.

1) Im glad people sell used cars, hence why I and many have got a lot of car for my money!
2) And you are right this is not a communist state, hence why i can state my personal opinion (thats allowed in a free democratic state right?)
3) Oh and if you re read - at no point do i say specifically that he is a dodgy/unscrupulous (guess you might say thats implied…)
4) Oh and..Marketing and Advertising - it is illegal to leave out important information that could mislead a buyer (unfair trading regs). Since he is a trader an' all
 
The only thing I notice (from face value) is that it's supposedly a 2000MY Vogue, and it has the older (pre 99MY) Orange indicators, instead of the clear ones. And the pre '99 headlamps, when it should have the later style with the black background... Yet it still has the later style fog lights...

Also few other bits of trim that I notice that don't really tie in with the 'Vogue' badge, but hey... good luck to them if they can find someone to buy it for that price... definitely won't be me though!
 
I tend to agree that this is a bit of a ****ty thread.

Yes it's a motor with some issues and overpriced but it feels much more like a personal attack on a traders reputation with little grounds than a serious criticism of the vehicle itself.

As for the 'illegality' of the advert it's only in so much as it would give you grounds for having some of the issues sorted if you were stupid enough to pay the money.

I wasn't going to bother saying anything when the thread was first posted but now an endorsement of a pet trader has been added with no justification at all really makes me wonder about the motivation.
