Can someone please tell me if it is best to get a td4 with a manual gearbox, or an automatic.

Are there any know problems with an automatic?

Well a few fators to think about before deciding are:
1. Automtic gearbox is very expensive to fix or replace if it goes wrong.
2. You'll get less miles per gallon with an automatic gearbox fitted.
3. Automatic gearbox is lovely when stuck in traffic jams.
4. Automatic gearbox has a step tronic over ride so you can use it in a type of manual mode. Useful when overtaking.
5. I suspect a manual gearbox with give slightly better acceleration too.
Hope this helps?

Auto is may be a better choice off road.

I think it's difficult to say either is better or worse - they both have their pros and cons.

Cheers

ello Ming. Did you get one of the boxes off of ron? if so Tell me MORE! Im well impressed with me TD4 (but then again my old 200tdi Disco was 13 year old).So this goes like hot snot by comparison and no probs so far !!! . not that i have driven another gaylander before, cos im not gay and i aint a hair dresser,(but i have cut our lasses fringe and trimmed her minge occasionally), but that could be another business adventure and i digress

Mondo not bothered if yer gay or a hairdresser or dress up ,[or use the curlin tongs mod] no i didn't fit a Ron gismo, i fitted mine bout two years ago, it works on a different way to Ron's his is maf orientated mine was fuel injection orientated ,if i had known the issues with the poor maf at the time i would have gone that way, but i could with the Ron system still fit one in fact bin thinking bout it, most guys/gals/others on here would not brag his system up unless it was good [and it is],so well worth considering, but its your call. . . :)

Decision made, due to a plethora of problems I have noticed by Freelander owners on this site, I am having a complete change of heart and going to get a reliable Audi.

Thanks for previous answers, this has saved me a lot of financial grief, and endless trips to and from the garage!

Talking about Audi, a mate of me has an A6, two weeks back he had to do his maintenance, (think it was 70K kms) amongst other stuff also the timing belt was to be replaced, anyway, he looked up to a bill of 1.000 Euro. (quite expensive in my opinion, I'm glad theTd4 has a chain and no belt).
