Sorry if this is covered elsewhere, have a 1997 diesel P38 auto with 140K, hopped into it just now, went to 4000 rpm before it would change into 2nd and would not go beyond that no matter what I tried. the atf level is good. Anyone any ideas or am I into a new gearbox. Thanks
 
Hi, Thanks fot the reply, yes, it will go into 2 at 4000rpm, move the selector to three nothing happens. No warning lights or messages
 
I tried 1 2 & 3. Changed atf last year, checked just now took about 1/2 litre, fluid that came out looked OK. Had been driving perfectly up till now.
 
if fluids cleans it could be a valve block issue which oil and filter change may help you could get pressure check , does it go quickly as normal in to r and d

Park and reverse are as normal, takes up D straight away, revs to 4000 before it goes to 2nd and then stays in 2nd.
 
I think that if you put it in low range and press the manual button that you can force it into 3 or 4 to see if they can still select
