Automatic gearbox

Hi was talking to the right guy yesterday, because my discovery 2 V8 2000 auto would not engage in any gear , as suggested I checked the cable all is ok brake lights working was low on fluid about litre n half run the engine processed through the gears put another 1/4 litre in run it again check level and it spewed 1/4 back out, now it's still not engaging ,but no warning lights on dash unless I sequence the gears quickly and then they come on , I've done all I can , if the filter is bollockst (clogged ) would that do it ,do you think there is anything else I can try all fuses ok don't know if it has a relay help please anyone would be greatly appreciated don't know why all of a sudden it happened it's not been anywhere for 5 months

If it's not been use for quite a while and the oil was old, it might just be a bit gummed up. My advice is to just keep trying, it might free itself up. Also, as a precaution, I would change the fluid, at least you'll get to see what the old fluid looks like.

Who knows, it depends on the state of it, I drained auto fluid that's 10 years old and it looked good, but when I drained my old Kia which was 5 years old it looked well dodgy. I know the stuff ain't cheap, my Kia cost £120 to replace the fluid but it's gotta be worth a try.

When you added fluid was the engine running? If not, you still have too little fluid in the box.
With the engine running fluid is pumped into the cooling system and into the torque converter so the level in the sump is much lower. If you add fluid with the engine off the fluid pools in the sump and will spew out if filled correctly.

If you checked it with the engine off, do it again with the engine running. Fill until it weeps out, then with the engine still running, move the gear lever slowly through each gear, then top up again if necessary. Put the plug back in before you turn the engine off.

If you knew this already I apologise, but you would be surprised how many people think they can check the autobox fluid with the engine off.

Ok just another thing I had the drivers door open this morning tried it again no joy but it's making a screeching noise and it gets less and less and just goes after about a min could that have any significance
