The extra gubbins on this rather dirty version?

Thanks everyone, hopefully here are pics of the pump in situ and spare one in the box. Can't be certain which pump or injectors were from my original auto. But i think the ones fitted now are from my auto

But the pump type is a side issue, isn't it? unless that's justification for 18hrs labour over 3 months with a failed result at the end.
It was the accusation I had provided the 'wrong' engine and the cam lift excuse that really bothered me.
That and being left with a leaking 40 mph smoke machine that needed easy-start and a good kicking just to get going (and you couldn't leave it more than a few hours or its easy start again, or brake cleaner as they recommended).

Apparently that's normal for old discos, even though that's not how it went to them.

IMHO:-

1) you've been had. 18 hours is ridiculous.
2) 300 TDi engines, pre EDC are same, man or auto is irrelevant
3) Easy start is a very bad idea for regular use - it may destroy an engine as it can wash the oil off the bores, increasing wear exponentially. Bad starting sounds like they didn't bleed it properly, OR, they didn't assemble it properly. continued bad starting is almost certainly air in the system, getting in due their bad workmanship.
4) it is not anything like normal for old disco's. mine is a De EDC'd 97 auto, and it goes very well - very well indeed as it happens.

It's worth naming this "garage" so others keep away - after all, its only your opinion of them.

And, IMHO, do the work yourself next time. ( or this time if its still running like a pig). If that sounds impossible - think about what you have been through with the "experts"........

Thanks, I know I've been had, nice to confirm that I'm also being told porkies.
I'd gladly name & shame as no one should go through the same. If I didn't need the disco, this would've made the car uneconomic to repair.. However I don't want to infringe any etiquette on the forum, also I'm seeking legal advice on this so will hold on until I speak to solicitor.

Anyone getting work done in North lincs message me I'll steer you clear

I'd do the work myself if I could, but actually know a great mechanic, he has sorted it now. I just needed an official garage job with a condition report (which I've also been fleeced for) so I could take the original seller to task for selling a broken car advertised as fully serviced in top condition.

It's been my worst car buying/garage experience ever. The disco still has faults due to the garage like oil leak, they broke my aircon, broken rev counter etc. But thanks to a good mechanic its timed, primed and runs Properly

Which is slightly annoying when the garage is adamant that not starting and lumpy running are as normal as tripling the estimate with no warning

I'd be careful about the legal avenue - its unlikely to be worth it, just post the truth all over the Internet - garage can't moan about the truth!

Are they in a professional body? - might be worth a complaint to them.... unlikely to get you much, but might give the garage some grief!

Good luck! :)

Don't have any experience of the 300 Tdi, but I would advise caution about naming anyone until you have checked on all of the implications, you can always do it later, but if you give them something to use against you then this side issue may grow and divert from the real case here.
Just wonder if you have called the AA or RAC and asked for some help or an opinion? I am sure they have seen many different problems and if you get lucky and speak with someone who knows their stuff it might help you.

For what its worth both pumps are the same and my 300 defender starts on the button every time even at minus 3 degrees with 173K on the engine

Mines starts every morning including this morning first turn of the key and a couple (if that) turns of the engine and the glow plugs aren't wired in:p
You've unfortunately been shafted....

Mines been sorted by a real mechanic, it was timing and air leaks etc. Just not set up at all. No need for easy start now (or deodorant as the garage suggested).

Funny how the 'wrong' engine works now

This garage is not part of a professional body, difficult to imagine now you've heard of their skill level.

As for AA/RAC I'm with them but best they offered was over £400 for a 'report' that couldn't be used in litigation

Thanks for the advice folks. Spoke with Trading Standards earlier. If I can prove he's making up work or not doing what he's charged for it may be a criminal matter.

I think I need to prove his 'wrong engine' and 'high cam lift' are nonsense.

Doesn't feel fair that I have to disprove this garage owners fiction

Which is why I don't use "Garages".

:)

I don't normally and certainly won't again. I just got ripped off so badly on the original purchase that I fell for the 2nd rip off while trying to make a case against the seller. He's the real villain, selling a car as fully serviced when in fact every item on the servicing was actually a list of what HADN'T been done. Thing was like a pressure cooker, he'd glued the lid on and the bolts in and blathered some more sealant for good measure. It lost a litre of oil every 10 miles, sprayed up out the breathers, rocker and bolts all up the underside of the bonnet. No power, no turbo. The inside of the car was a mouse toilet, just a really tatty car, which is exactly the opposite of how it was advertised.

The sellers attitude changed instantly once he'd got his money from 'Your lucky you came to me, I'm a LR specialist, and you've found yourself a great example of the breed here' to 'It's your fault for buying an old car and believing what I told you 5 mins ago'. The abuse he gave me over the phone was actually verbal assault.

Think twice about LR specialists in Flintshire is all I'm saying at the moment, if what he sold me is anything to go by, you don't want a galv chassis off this guy

Anyway, he's next... once I sort this garage out ;)

Ah! that rings a bell.... looked at a 50th anniversary D1 over that way. It was, most definitely, not as described. My laughter was not well received  ..... :p to him!

Good luck. And as a fellow victim of an engine shafting, you have my sympathies for the time wasted and stress it causes.

Hi all, just thought I'd update the thread with a progress report. Firstly though thanks! The great info and topics in this forum have helped me fix loads of niggling jobs on the disco, much appreciated :)

So anyway, I have applied to court for a refund from the garage that bungled my engine swap then lied about it. I decided there were so many lies and the owner is such a delusional and belligerent knob, that just asking for a refund was simpler. He's been paid for a job, but improperly done and not completed it. That's not right is it?

He actually submitted a defence which is primarily angry demands for a further £1000 from me in trumped up expenses (3xstaff wages for a week, legal costs and storage of my old engine next to a skip :D) . He's also claimed there's 'vast differences' in the two fuel pumps and he included two bad quality pics of fuel pumps that aren't mine!

Also for some reason he's claimed auto data lists the timing belt as a 4.5 hour job, does that seem right? I have an auto data quote from another garage saying 8 hours for entire engine swap:confused:.

If i can upload a pic I wonder if someone familiar with auto data could look at the info and interpret it for me. Especially what AC means in this context.

All help greatly appreciated

.. It's not letting me upload pics at the moment sorry

AC means Air con & i can only think that he's meaning that he had to Remove your A/C pump to fit your FIP !
