hi wondered if anyone can give me some advice my classic Range Rover is making a clunking noise when I put it in reverse , more noticeable when car has been running for a while .
I have recently had gearbox fluid and filter changed , kicks down fine and no issues changing forward gears

has it become more noticeable since oil change ?check the rest of the system for backlash ie jacking up a front and rear wheel and rocking props ,its worth pulling rear out put housing off and checking the shaft splines they are prone to wear and rare to find a good one, ftc657 is shaft iits splines in the middle that wear, though some clunking in the auto is not uncommon as box age and takes a full rebuild to cure

Initially after oil and filter Change was perfect no noise at all just started recently will check prop shaft

Does it still clink if you hold it in N for a moment before R? Ibe always found that when they start clonking that adopting that strategy stops the clonk.

Tried holding in in N for awhile seemed to reduce clunking noise a bit , will check prop shafts as I'm off this weekend

If waiting in N for a second or two has reduced the clonk then the normal reason is that it is because you've let the engine tickover drop to its rest rate.

Are you running aircon on at the moment? That can have an impact on tickover that makes the clonk appear in summer and go in winter.

In my experience, unless the Rangie is pretty tired and has been abused then the biggest impact on the clonk is a slightly too high tickover.

My 1987 RR clunked when going from D to R when the oil in the transfer box was hot from the day I took delivery, and then for the 10 years I owned it, my 18 year old disco does the same from the day I took delivery... so that's 28 years of clunking, so don't worry about it.
Or fit a Borg Warner transfer box as at the time when 1990MY RR was road test they stated "with the new transfer box the clonk had now gone" so I can only assume that other RRs of a similar year did the same.
