Autobox speed sensor -- help please

Hi All,

Saga continues with gearbox in limp mode.

Workshop have checked all the wiring to the box and now think that it is the speed sensor from the torque converter to the box not working, so that the box doesn't know what to do .....

Reaction is to start blaming the workshop because they pulled the gearbox recently - would this have damaged anything related?

However, blame doesn't get it fixed, so any advice welcome.
 
There is no speed sensor between torque converter and gearbox. There is a speed sensor on the gearbox output shaft and one in the transfer box. But they are more to do with low range operation. At a guess i would say they have damaged a connection or trapped and broken a wire somewhere. The internal electrics do not stop working because the box has been removed, unless it is the biggest coincidence ever.

+1 to wammers comment. If there is no dash indication of the gear lever position, there is a severed connection or the XYZ switch has been bashed.

That means that there is no actual damage within the bell housing?

Off to a "specialist" in the morning ..... at least I know that they won't be pulling the box.

Possibly the xyz switch damaged?

Engagement of drive is mechanical all else is electronic. Based on position of XYZ switch. The position of the XYZ is read by the ECU this then commands internal solenoids to change gears as needed subject to road speed engine RPM and power demands.
 
Right, just run the Nancom again and it shows fault P0722 stalling speed.


Rave says torque convertor slipping.

Surely not, doctor?
 
Yes, I think it starts in a high gear, seems to be wanting to change up, then makes a harsh gearchange into 4th. Doesn't lock up into direct drive.

Ok that rules out loss of oil pump drive then. If there is no dash indication of gear position XYZ switch or connection and cabling to it need a very close looking at. Box seems to have lost link to ECU.
 
Right, the Auto Box workshop is good ... made a very good impression.

They have now checked all the wiring outside the box and are going to remove it to see the speed sensor inside ..... just in their hands now.

Thank heavens that labour is reasonable here ...

I've just twigged where you are - I had a Series II shred a rear diff just outside Al Ain some years back - happened at about 4 in the afternoon; had a new axle & propshaft on the vehicle by 6... on the road by 8....
A Honda 50 trying to turn with a Landy axle on board is quite funny....
 
Output shaft speed sensor is connected on gearbox at C561 pre 99. C0243 post 99. The lead from that connects to C560 pre 99. C0988 post 99. This connector is below centre console. In turn cable from this goes to gearbox ECU pin 20 (shield diesel) pin 15 petrol. Pin 2 (diesel) pin 42 petrol (pink wire). Pin 38 (diesel) pin 14 petrol (yellow wire). If box has been lowered damage could have been done to either the connectors or the cables. I find it seriously hard to believe that the sensor has failed. Possible but highly unlikely.

As above. I say again, if the dash does not show the gear position, then there is a wiring problem or the XYZ switch, a speed sensor has feck all to do with that.
 
I agree totally -- if I go to the workshop tomorrow, what on earth do I say to the guy? He says that he's had an auto electrician check all the power ... how can I check the xyz switch?

The cable that connects under the centre console sounds favourite -- is the connector above the box but below the floor?

I'm trying to think of how I can show him without ****ing him off -- you know he kind of thing "I've been on the forum and the guys say ...." doesn't go down too well here!

Going to open Rave now and see if I can find the cable ....

That's brilliant.

I'm going to get it back from the auto box people before they remove the box ...... and take it back to the workshop which pulled the box last week.

Surely they pulled the box and yanked a cable or three ...... just like you said.

Wife says that the mechanics were looking very sheepish when we collected the car ..... she notice these things!
