Hello all,

Just looking for some advice. I've got far too many vehicles with 5 landrovers and one Volvo. Only one of the landrovers works and the Volvo is an 09 plate which is very modern for me. Now obviously i hate the Volvo and love the landrovers. The one working landrover is a 110 auto with 300tdi and is the wifes as she only drives autos...the volvo is also an auto.
Now for the question, has anyone ever converted a S2a LWB to an auto as i want to ditch the volvo as i hate it, it smells all modern, costs a fortune in Tax and repairs, is warm, dry, economical and comfortable (pffft!!).
Current box is an S3 with a 2.5 diesel so assume it would be a box and engine swap and really want to keep the front rad panel in the same position.

Thanks,

Ian

A 200tdi fits a series and 200tdi's were made with auto in a discovery, so yes.
Probably involve hacking and mods to the transmission covers and tons of other mods too.

I recall seeing one converted years ago so it is doable. I have no idea what was used.

Well, interesting ..... in that I intend to restore an SIIA 88" and convert it to auto for health reasons.....

having looked at this briefly some time ago - the issue, IIRC, is that the ZF box from the disco / RRC / P38 is quite a bit longer than the trans in the IIA ..... so I think the chassis might need a tweek, maybe - or move the front panel - which doesn't suit me either.....

Engine wise I was thinking RV8 - but the 200 and 300 are fine injuns.....

Thanks guys.....i know of a series 1 station wagon lwb years ago that was an auto. The ZF with 300 tdi in my 110 is ok if a bit slow...will check how far forward it is compared to the bullkhead to see how far forward it comes.

I have seen one, the only real problem the gear levers> I seem to recall they come up where the middle seat would be so you loose that.

Yuk! The AT is cable change - so that can go anywhere with a longer/shorter cable ... I'm "thinking" * column change for my S11A .... ( * = more like dreaming TBH ;) )

If the transfer case was getting changed, then the D2 transfer case is cable operated .... so that could be moved anorl .... but then it'd be permanent 4x4, and I doubt the series axles would take that....

Possibly better with a different AT .....

I really like automatic transmissions but only when they shift as intended. Most hydro-mechanical systems will be difficult to adjust (especially with out in-depth knowledge of the inner workings of governors and valve bodies) so I'd investigate wheel sizes and final drive ratio's before choosing a system. More modern hydro-electrical systems will involve computers which more often than not involve themselves with the electrickery side of the engine management system - this might get to be a bit irritating...

Agreed - but the ZF4HP22EH models can be run with the stand alone compushift system - there's load of info on the Ashcroft site ...... :)

@Mingus - have you spoken to Ashcroft yet ?
